Last week involved a lot of miles, a lot of conversations, and more than a few cups of coffee.
Between client visits, industry meetings, and helping people navigate claims situations, it was a good reminder of what I enjoy most about this profession.
It's easy to think insurance is all about policies, premiums, and paperwork.
The reality is that it's about understanding the people behind the business.
The best conversations rarely start with insurance.
They start with learning about an operation, understanding challenges, hearing where a business is headed, and seeing firsthand what owners are working so hard to build.
Whether that's through industry events, client visits, or simply sitting down and listening, every conversation helps me better understand the world my clients operate in.
And when something unexpected happens—a claim, an accident, a storm, or a loss—that understanding becomes incredibly important.
Because at the end of the day, we're all trying to accomplish the same thing: help businesses, families, and communities continue moving forward.
That's the part of this job I enjoy most.
Not just writing policies, but building relationships and helping people navigate both the expected and the unexpected.

Your website is part of your insurance application whether you realize it or not.
One of the first things many underwriters do when reviewing an account is start searching online.
They'll look at:
🌐 your website
📱 social media
📸 photos
📰 articles
🔍 whatever they can find publicly
The challenge is that websites often don't get updated as quickly as businesses do.
I've seen situations where:
• services are listed that are no longer offered
• operations are overstated for marketing purposes
• old projects create confusion
• information online doesn't match the insurance submission
When that happens, underwriting questions usually follow.
A quick review of your website every now and then can save a lot of headaches during the insurance process.
Your website is a great marketing tool.
Just make sure it's telling the same story your business is today.

Proud to see Renaissance Insurance Group supporting this event and Colorado agriculture.
I had the opportunity to attend the CLA Annual Meeting last week and always come away appreciating the conversations that happen when producers, agribusiness professionals, industry leaders, and policymakers get together in one room.
Agriculture continues to face challenges, but it's encouraging to see so many people committed to the future of the industry and willing to have meaningful discussions about where we're headed.
Thank you to the Colorado Livestock Association for putting together a great event and for the work you do supporting Colorado producers year-round.

🏥 Nobody likes hearing something is wrong.
Whether it's from a doctor, a veterinarian, a mechanic, or during an insurance renewal, bad news is still bad news.
The reality, though, is that most problems don't show up overnight.
High blood pressure usually isn't caused by one cheeseburger.
A difficult insurance renewal usually isn't caused by one bad day, either.
Things tend to build over time.
📋 Payroll drifts from reality.
🚗 Driver records aren't reviewed.
🏢 Building maintenance gets pushed off.
📈 Property values become outdated.
⚠️ Safety procedures get skipped.
🔄 Claims trends start repeating themselves.
Then one day someone points it out.
The diagnosis may not be fun to hear, but it gives us a chance to do something about it.
That's why I've always viewed insurance as more than just a policy.
Sometimes it's a checkup.
Not because insurance is supposed to fix every problem, but because it can help identify areas where a business can become stronger, healthier, and more resilient.
The businesses that tend to have the smoothest insurance experience aren't always the ones with the lowest premiums.
They're usually the ones paying attention to the fundamentals.
🚦 Insurance isn't the problem.
Sometimes it's just the check engine light letting us know something needs attention.
And just like our own health, it's usually easier to address the small things before they become big things.

Things people sometimes think insurance advisors do:
• write the policy
• raise the premium to make more money 😅
• send the invoice
• disappear until next renewal
But for us at Renaissance, the job goes a lot deeper than that.
Behind the scenes, we’re constantly:
• reviewing operations and exposures
• digging through policy language
• negotiating with carriers
• helping with claims situations
• explaining market changes
• answering questions
• and helping businesses navigate problems before they become bigger ones
The insurance market has definitely landed a few unexpected punches lately, and we know renewals haven’t always been easy.
But at the end of the day, we genuinely care about the people and businesses we work with — and that part is never just “policy paperwork” to us.
We’re all navigating this market together.

One of the most common conversations in insurance right now:
“I haven’t even had a claim… so why did my insurance go up?”
Honestly, the frustration is understandable.
A lot of pricing changes happening today are tied to bigger trends happening behind the scenes:
• rising construction costs
• more severe weather losses
• labor shortages
• more expensive repairs
• increased lawsuit severity
• and higher equipment/vehicle costs
Even businesses with strong loss histories can still feel the impact of broader market conditions.
Part of our job is helping clients understand what’s driving these changes — not just sending over a renewal and hoping for the best.
Tried to put together a more relatable version of that conversation below. 😅

One of the best parts of this business is getting to work alongside hardworking local companies that are out there building great things every day.
Shoutout to our client Fusion Sign Labz for the creativity, craftsmanship, and work they continue to put into helping businesses stand out.
There’s a lot more behind great branding and signage than most people realize — design, production, installation, deadlines, problem solving, and a whole lot of coordination behind the scenes.
Always appreciate working with businesses that take pride in what they do. Keep up the great work 👏

One of the biggest misconceptions in commercial insurance is that businesses are rated strictly by industry or building type alone.
In reality, underwriting looks much deeper than that.
Two businesses can look very similar on the surface but have very different risk profiles depending on:
• operations
• maintenance
• safety culture
• claims history
• employee turnover
• documentation
• and overall risk management practices
That’s why insurance conversations should start with understanding the operation first — not just shopping price.
Tried to break this down in a more practical, plain-English way below.

Honestly, most people are tired of insurance conversations that feel more like a sales pitch than actual guidance.
Overcomplicated language, constant upselling, and hearing more about how impressive someone is than what actually matters to your business gets old fast.
Our approach has always been pretty simple:
Listen first.
Understand the operation.
Give straightforward advice.
Build coverage that actually fits.
Insurance doesn’t need to feel confusing or high pressure to be effective.
