Label + Sort

As often happens, when this client moved in, items were unceremoniously put wherever there was an open space. And honestly- it can be beneficial to live in a house for a while before assigning things a permanent spot. You might use spaces a little differently than you originally thought. But now, we’ve been able to move through the house slowly, assigning long term homes for things. Many organizing products were reused in here and many things were re-homed, creating a well ordered office closet with room to grow!

Can you imagine getting dressed in here? Nothing stuffed, all in order, a place of quiet.

One of my biggest tips for closets is to remove what doesn’t fit or you no longer like. Even if it was $1000. Even if your mother in law gave it to you. And while we’re at it, let’s discuss hanging onto “skinny clothes”. Do you really want to walk into a closet of guilt and shame each morning?! Let’s agree to be kinder to ourselves! And also if it fits again one day, it’ll probably be out of style. 😉

It’s January. We were thankful for our stuff. We got new stuff. And now we are purging our stuff.

Listen, I am in the same boat. To a certain degree, editing things out will always be a part of the process because things are continually coming in! It’s the water into the lake needs an outlet to prevent a flood scenario.

This clever mom brought me in before the holidays to reevaluate after a move and clear space before Santa visited. But don’t worry. You are not behind. Every day of the year is a good time to become Boss over your stuff and not the other way around.

“I keep walking in my closet and smiling.” The absolute best text to get after a closet session. Clothes can carry so much baggage; do what you have to do to make where you get dressed a happy place!

Making pantries über functional is our jam! Clients often start with the pantry and kitchen since they’re the heart of the home. Here we mixed bamboo and acrylic products to make it both functional and pretty. 🤩

Public spaces especially need clear labeling. For this church closet we sorted tablecloths by size on a double hanging rack. Labels on rod organizers make finding the correct size a breeze. We rounded it out by putting a laundry basket on top of the rack that’s just for laundering and returning the tablecloths to the rack. Make it clear. Make it easy!

Who’s traveling right now and where are you going? We leave in the morning to camp our way back to Texas from family in Canada 🇨🇦. If you have little kids, I highly recommend a travel bin somewhere in your home. This client keeps travel fans, baggies of crayons, packable crafts, wonder marker kits and the like ready to load up at a moments notice from a shelf in the garage. Make packing & traveling a little easier on yourself!

For this lovely client, beautiful mementos kept emerging from the depths of her closet and each had a story. Displaying a portion of them on the ‘Drop Zone’ of her previously installed Elfa system ensures they’re the first thing she sees each morning. No longer tucked away and forgotten, dainty opera glasses, a picture of her mother, special boxes are front and center. These things matter to her and therefore became a priority for us while organizing.
