The two winged sculptures at the dedication site of the Hoover Dam are stunning examples of Art Deco design — and a source of good fortune for many visitors. Touching the figures’ feet is said to bring luck.

Science meets superstition at this small metal marker in Paris, which denotes the mathematical center of the city. It’s considered lucky to spin on one foot at this spot, or cross its path whenever possible.

Nestled along one of the United Kingdom’s most popular hikes is a large “wishing stone” that’s said to bring luck. As legend has it, this imposing stone will grant a wish for anyone who runs or hops around it three times.

🐒 Guardhouse Monkey (Mons, Belgium) 🐒
The entrance to Mons city hall features a small metal monkey sculpture. While its origins are unclear — some believe it was crafted as a test of a blacksmith’s skill — locals continue the tradition of rubbing the monkey’s head for luck, and believe he is capable of granting wishes.

“I’ve seen many animals during my hikes, but this was the first time I crossed paths with moose,” said photographer Charles Williams. “I was amazed how large and gentle they were.
