“Enough is enough” came to our mind when we traveled to Florida in summer of 2017 and were faced with so much plastic waste covering the beautiful beaches. After carrying many arm-fulls of plastic off the shores to the recycle bins and trash cans - we felt like we had to do something to help reduce the amount of waste in the first place.
Among other hard and soft plastic items - like straws, wrappers, cups, netting, balloons (wait, please remember balloons don’t just disappear when we release them in the air) - we found so many plastic toothbrushes.
Remember the number 320 that we mentioned earlier? Times that by 9 billion people on this planet - that’s a lot of plastic that will go into our eco-system and that our future generations won’t be so lucky to inherit.
Plastic waste does not just disappear - It will stick around for centuries. Out of the 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic that have been produced so far, 6.3 billion metric tons have landed on landfills or in our oceans.
“Enough is enough” is now a statement that we think is so important to constantly think about throughout our daily life. Open your eyes a bit on your way to work or school and unfortunately, we promise, you’ll see tons of plastic waste left and right. And the sad part is, most of it will stick around on this planet for about 500 years.
When our eyes were opened on that Florida beach, we couldn’t close them anymore.
When we came face to face with this fact, we realized we had to make the switch to a more sustainable lifestyle. “But where do we start,” was our biggest question...
