Happy National Pigeon Day from Scuttle, a bird who sees the world a little differently.

Today we celebrate all pigeons—especially those who overcome incredible odds and continue to thrive. 🕊️

Ten days ago, baby Peetey couldn't even stand on their own. This weekend, they started taking short flights, and flew across the room today.

We're so excited seeing Peetey experience each milestone. Watch out everyone, Peetey is airborne!

Peetey had his first vet visit today and was a perfect patient with Dr. Adair!

The good news is that, despite everything he endured, Peetey has no broken bones. He does have some bruising on his wings and is blind in his left eye, which means he cannot be safely released back into the wild.

He wasn't alone for his big appointment, either. His blind friend Scuttle came along as emotional support, and the two made quite the impact at the vet's office.

While Peetey's injuries mean he'll never return to the wild, he will spend the rest of his life safe, loved, and cared for by people. At only a few weeks old, he has a bright future ahead of him.

Once he's fully healed, Peetey will be looking for a forever home of his own. ❤️🕊️

A huge thank you to Cummington Wildlife and VESH West Springfield for their support, guidance, and compassionate care throughout Peetey's journey so far. We are incredibly grateful for everything you've done to help this little survivor.

Many of you have been following the story of baby Peetey, one of the most heartbreaking cases our rescue has taken in recently.

Peetey was found after a group of boys knocked a pigeon nest down with stones and continued throwing rocks at the helpless baby. Despite being severely injured, Peetey was still alive when they threw them into the water to die. Thankfully, another young boy witnessed what happened, rushed into action, and rescued Peetey from the water before bringing them home to his father for help.

We are happy to share that Peetey is currently stable and doing well. They are actively drinking water on their own and even preening, both encouraging signs. Peetey will be seeing a veterinarian this week, and while there is still a road ahead, we are feeling very optimistic about their recovery.

Thank you to everyone who has been following Peetey's journey and sending positive thoughts. More updates to come soon!

For everyone following this story, baby Peetey is stable and doing well, and actively using their beak to drink water and preen. More updates to come after they see the vet this week, but we're feeling very optimistic about their recovery.

Something happened yesterday that was a perfect example of children being raised to have compassion for animals versus children with no compassion.
Two boys found a pigeon nest containing a young pigeon. The boys began to throw stones at the nest until it fell and continued to stone the helpless baby pigeon. The boys threw the badly injured, but still alive pigeon into the water to die.
There was another boy who witnessed this horrifying act and rescued the pigeon from the water. The boy rushed the pigeon home to his father for help.
Cummington Wildlife was too full to accept this pigeon, but wanted to help. Supplies and instructions were given to the father and a pigeon rescue nearby was notified. Many thanks to Brittany for agreeing to take this poor creature.
I don't know if this pigeon survived its injuries. I do know that at the very least the pigeon experienced kindness from multiple people trying to help it.
For anyone thinking "boys will be boys" or " its only a pigeon, who cares", please think again. There is definitive research that children who torture animals have mental health issues that need to be addressed in order for them to grow into healthy adults. The identities of the children who tortured the pigeon were known and the parents were being notified.
It is important in this society to raise children with compassion towards animals (or children) that cannot defend themselves. The boy and his father that rushed to intervene to help an injured baby pigeon are heroes. All the rescues that deal with these horrifying events are also heroes.
The picture below is my healthy pigeon so as not to upset anyone. Be kind to animals.

🕊 Spot the Difference: Racing Pigeon vs. Feral Pigeon

These two young pigeons may look similar at first glance, especially with their matching check feather patterns and injured right legs, but they come from very different backgrounds.

The pigeon on the left (Butch) is a domestic racing/homing pigeon. Notice the sleeker head shape, lighter-colored eyes, and the visible layer of skin around the eyes called cere development, which is commonly seen in bred domestic pigeons.

The pigeon on the right (Fairry) is a feral (street) pigeon. Feral pigeons tend to have rounder heads, vibrant orange eyes, and a more compact appearance overall.

While their origins may differ, both deserve the same compassion, safety, and care when injured or in need.
