Craniosacral work and TMJ Relief in West Lake Hills, Austin, Wimberley, and adjacent communities.
Hi! It's MaryAnn, visiting your inbox again š - https://mailchi.mp/d213596c9043/hi-its-maryann-visiting-your-inbox-this-spring-5691613
I have had a blog since 2010, and I still post occasionally. Iāve thought of switching to Substack but havenāt done it.
Wordpress provides a way for me to see which posts people are viewing, by day, week, month, and year. This one got four views yesterday.
I didnāt remember writing it, so I read it, and itās good, really fresh. Sharing hereā¦
Note to self: remember this next time I get sick of myself I will forget again how powerful this is. I will resist doing it, caught up in the whirl of thoughts. And I will get sick of myself again, and find my way back to this practice.
Horizon therapy. Davis Mountains.
If youāve been going to Casa de Luz for years, you may recall that PamĆ©la Overeynder had a Craniosacral Biodynamics practice there for many years.
PamƩla is offering sessions in my office space on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
To reach her, call 512.826.7563 or email pamelaovereynder @ gmail.com.
Since I moved to Wimberley, Iāve cut back on my days in my West Lake Hills office (offering Craniosacral Biodynamics/Therapy and TMJ Relief) to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
I offer the same in Wimberley on Thursdays.

The Pain PT shares what happens in the brain with chronic pain. The anterior cingulate cortex is involved. It increases aversion and alarm, distorting the amount of pain experienced by greatly increasing it.
This reflex may be involved in reactions to light that intensify migraines and may also be linked to anxiety and depression.

Chronic Pain Rewires Circuits in the Cortical Brain - The Pain PT Hereāa a 2017 study from New York University that found āthat chronic pain rewires circuits in a brain region called the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) to increase āaversion,ā the amount of attention paid to, and alarm felt about, any given pain signal. The current best advice for people who have had a concussion is to rest for a couple of days and then do things.
Neurons get torn, and donāt easily repair. Instead, you struggle to read or do math while the brain makes new connections. Then you start to feel better. Neurons recalibrate ā which doesnāt happen when you rest āuntil you feel betterā, which may take months.

People with depression and/or anxiety who take SSRI medications may experience bruxism (clenching and grinding their teeth) as a side effect.
If this is you, share this link with your doctor. Iām not a subscriber, and it costs $47 to read the whole thing. Also, there may be newer research on this topic.
From an abstract:
āAlternative classes of antidepressants reviewed include serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, atypical antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Findings indicate that dopamine agonists and buspirone are currently the most effective medications to treat the side effects of SSRI-induced bruxism, but results regarding the effectiveness of specific antidepressants that avoid bruxism altogether remain inconclusive.ā

Okay, from Gil Hedleyās presentation, The Nerve Tour, last week, the sacral nerves are sympathetic, not parasympathetic.

Some day I will take a class from Kathleen Ukleja. This one looks great. Hmm. Could I get to Switzerland in April this year? Hmm.
THE POLYVAGAL FACE
The Vagus nerve has become a major focus in many branches of therapy, including our own. However, the ventral vagal complex at the centre of social engagement has always been more than just the ānewā branch of the Vagus. Early in his research Porges wrote that āthe social engagement system is conceptualized to emphasize a system that has a common neural substrate composed of several cranial nerves that develop embryologically togetherā and this system āfocuses only on the neural regulation of the striated muscles of the face and head and the specific autonomic functions mediated by the myelinated Vagusā.
The entire group of cranial nerves, collectively known as Special Visceral Efferent, enables emotional communication through the face and voice. How we look, how we sound, gives away a lot more than the words we use to interact with others. While the cardiovascular rate is modulated by the Vagus, in line with the emotional experience. In our practice we can work effectively with all these nerves, consequently improving vagal tone and making us more resilient to stress.
In Behind the Smile, I will introduce clinical approaches to enhancing the function of these cranial nerves. Join at the Da-Sein Institut, in Winterthur, Switzerland in April 26-28.

Thereās a mutual relationship between anxiety and somatic symptoms. It can be a loop: somatic symptoms can create and perpetuate anxiety, and/or anxiety can create and perpetuate somatic symptoms.

THE DYNAMIC IN STILLNESS
In the Stillness of Life Becker wrote: āWhat weāre talking about here is life and motionā¦. the CSF swells and recedes rhythmically like the tides of the ocean. There are ways in which we can bring the fluctuation down to a still point, manually. And when it is brought down to a still point, there is an interchange between every single fluid and every single cell in the body. It happens in an instant. You have transmuted the breath of life into every cellā¦ for every cell to take into itself and revitalize itself.ā
It does not matter whether we are talking about the stillness reached in a state of balance, a still point in the fluid tide or deepening through the multiple levels of stillness, during a treatment session. In each case, the stillness is an opening, an opportunity for transmutation, a change of state in the potency of the breath of life which brings about healing. The stillness is not an end in itself.
Upcoming changes to my bodywork practice:

I moved to Wimberley last August and have been making the drive into Austin and West Lake to work ever since. Although itās a lovely, scenic drive through the Hill Country, Iād enjoy spending less time on the road and more time working.
So, I am looking for a space to practice in Wimberley, 1-2 days a week while commuting 2-3 days to my West Lake office.
If you know of any place, or anyone in Wimberley who might want to work with me once I get a space, please let me know or share this with them.
May 2024 bring you safety, wellness, peace, joy, and compassion. ā¤ļø

I have found this Substack worth my while to read. The author is publishing a book in April on the neurobiology of connection, based on Stephen Porgesā research on the autonomic nervous system, but taking it further, from within one individual to how we connect and relate to one another.

HeartMath is offering a new biofeedback sensor with a free app that you can use to improve your coherence/heart rate variability (HRV), balancing your mind and emotions, improving performance, and reducing stress.
This is a good way to deepen the overall health of your system, especially your resilience in the face of stress.
Who doesnāt need more of that???
Using the HeartMath program is a nice variation on meditation. HeartMath offers exercises you can do while you watch your HRV improve in real time, that you can then use in times of stress. You get feedback, and you can track your HRV over time using the device.

Some clients coming in for Craniosacral Biodynamics have neuroplastic pain, also called central sensitization. Itās when an injury to the tissues has healed but the pain remains, indicating itās become based in the brain.
The Pain PT teaches an approach to chronic pain that involves retraining the brain.
Craniosacral Biodynamics helps the whole system relax deeply, which helps these clients relax more deeply and get better results from doing exercises taught by the Pain PT.
A stressed brain and nervous system can cause many a symptom in the body. When that is the case, our focus should be on getting the brain and nervous system to settle down, not on trying to fix the symptom directly.

Healing*
A car wreck in 1996 left me feeling like I was living in someone elseās pain body, and I set out to find some relief. I didnāt understand what the accident had done to my body, just knew that sometimes I dragged one foot when I walked, my hips and back hurt all the time, and moving in certain ways was painful.
I tried massage of various types, chiropractic of several types, osteopathic manual therapy, rehab yoga, regular yoga of different types, structural integration (Rolfing), Pilates, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, functional movement, and more. I had never had a massage before, and I loved visiting these folks practicing various healing arts. Their work was so different from my writing jobs in journalism, technology, and government. It opened up a whole new world for me.
When I was considering a career change, I knew I wanted to do something in the healing arts. After being accepted into an acupuncture program and learning Reiki, I did Reiki for an injured healer friend, who told me I needed to get a license to touch people. So I went to massage school, doing my basic training at the nationally known Lauterstein-Conway Massage School, later completing its advanced program and becoming board certified in therapeutic massage and bodywork.
I finally understood what had happened to my body in that car accident, and I worked diligently to heal from that injury, blogging about it here.
