When can you expect to see your tax refund?

🔑Start checking status 24 – 48 hours after IRS receives e-file: Once the IRS receives your e-filed tax return, you can use the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool to track your federal tax refund status. The tool will show “Return Received” once the IRS has begun processing your tax return. Keep in mind: you will not see a refund date until the IRS finishes processing and approves your tax refund.

🔑Status change to “Refund Approved”: Once the IRS finishes processing your tax return and confirms your tax return is approved, your status will change from “Return Received” to “Refund Approved.” Sometimes the change in status can take a few days, but it could take longer – so check back and be patient. The IRS will provide a personalized refund date once your status moves to “Refund Approved.” *The IRS expects to issue 9 out of 10 federal tax refunds within 21 days of acceptance if you e-file with direct deposit.

🔑Status change to “Refund Sent”: Once the status in Where’s My Refund? shows “Refund Sent”, the IRS has sent your tax refund to your financial institution for direct deposit. It can take up to five days for your bank to deposit funds into your account. If you requested that your tax refund be mailed, it could take several weeks for your check to arrive.

🔑Eight in 10 taxpayers get their refunds faster by using e-file with direct deposit. E-file with direct deposit is the fastest way to get your tax refund. If you mailed a paper tax return, you can start checking the status of your tax refund about four weeks after sending.

Refund running late?

Taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit may experience a refund hold. According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue these refunds before mid-February. The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or debit cards starting February 27, 2018, if these taxpayers chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.

It takes additional time for refunds to be processed after leaving the IRS, and for financial institutions to accept and deposit them to bank accounts and products like debit cards. Also many financial institutions do not process payments on weekends or holidays, which can affect when refunds reach taxpayers. For EITC and ACTC filers, the three-day holiday weekend involving President’s Day affects their refund timing

Decide Whether or Not to Itemize:

Depending on your income, filing status, and other details, you may benefit by not itemizing your taxes but rather claiming the standard deduction on your returns. People who are self-employed or have higher incomes typically itemize deductions to lower what they owe the IRS and also to get some of these expenses refunded to them.

However, it may not behoove you to itemize given that the standard deduction limit will rise to $6300 for the 2018 filing season. You may not reach this amount even if you itemize deductions on your returns. In fact, you may owe more to the IRS if you do not claim the standard deduction.

If your income and tax filing status do require you to itemize, however, you may lower your tax burden by deduction expenses for:

🔑medical expenses
🔑charitable contributions
🔑state and local taxes
🔑mortgage interest deductions and mortgage points
🔑health insurance premiums if you are self-employed
🔑losses to your home or business from qualifying natural disasters

You should compile receipts for these and other deductible expenses before the start of the 2018 tax filing season.

Many taxpayers have encountered individuals impersonating IRS officials – in person, over the telephone and via email. Don’t get scammed.
The IRS initiates most contacts through regular mail delivered by the United States Postal Service.

However, there are special circumstances in which the IRS will call or come to a home or business, such as when a taxpayer has an overdue tax bill, to secure a delinquent tax return or a delinquent employment tax payment, or to tour a business as part of an audit or during criminal investigations.

Even then, taxpayers will generally first receive several letters (called “notices”) from the IRS in the mail.

Note that the IRS does not:

🔑Demand that you use a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. The IRS will not ask for your debit or credit card numbers over the phone.
🔑Demand that you pay taxes without the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes. You should also be advised of your rights as a taxpayer.
🔑Threaten to bring in local police, immigration officers or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying. The IRS also cannot revoke your driver’s license, business licenses, or immigration status. Threats like these are common tactics scam artists use to trick victims into buying into their schemes.
Scams take many shapes and forms, such as phone calls, letters and emails. Many IRS impersonators use threats to intimidate and bully people into paying a fabricated tax bill. They may even threaten to arrest or deport their would-be victim if the victim doesn’t comply.

Taxpayers with an expired Individual Taxpayer Identification Number should renew it as soon as possible if they need to file a 2017 tax return. They can renew it by submitting a Form W-7. Tax returns with expired ITINs will face delays. Affected taxpayers may also lose out on key tax benefits until they renew their ITINs. It can take the IRS up to 11 weeks to complete an ITIN renewal during tax season.

ITINs that expired at the end of 2017 include those:

🔑Not used on a tax return at least once in the past three years.
🔑With middle digits of 70, 71, 72 or 80.
🔑ITINs that have middle digits of 78 or 79 expired on December 31, 2016, but taxpayers can still renew them.

After filling out the Form W-7 and gathering all required documentation, taxpayers can submit the package by mailing it to the IRS address on the Form W-7 instructions.

Taxpayers who are eligible for, or who have, a Social Security number shouldn’t renew their ITIN; instead, they should notify the IRS of their SSN and previous ITIN so the IRS can merge their accounts.

Taxpayers who have filing or payment obligations under U.S. tax law and don’t have or aren’t eligible for an SSN must file with an ITIN.

Here are five key 🔑 points for taxpayers to keep in mind on exemptions and dependents when filing their 2017 tax return:

🔑Claiming Personal Exemptions. On a joint return, taxpayers can claim one exemption for themselves and one for their spouse. If a married taxpayer files a separate return, they can only claim an exemption for their spouse if their spouse meets all of these requirements. The spouse:
-Had no gross income.
-Is not filing a tax return.
-Was not the dependent of another taxpayer.

🔑Claiming Exemptions for Dependents. A dependent is either a child or a relative who meets a set of tests. Taxpayers can normally claim an exemption for their dependents. Taxpayers should remember to list a Social Security number for each dependent on their tax return.

🔑Dependents Cannot Claim Exemption. If a taxpayer claims an exemption for their dependent, the dependent cannot claim a personal exemption on their own tax return. This is true even if the taxpayer does not claim the dependent’s exemption on their tax return.

🔑Dependents May Have to File a Tax Return. This depends on certain factors like total income, whether they are married, and if they owe certain taxes.

🔑Exemption Phase-Out. Taxpayers earning above certain amounts will lose part or all the $4,050 exemption. These amounts differ based on the taxpayer’s filing status.
