“My first big contact with Hope was through Riverside Bible Camp. I worked there for 7 summers and got to know so many amazing kids, families, and churches (including Hope!). I graduated from college in the spring of 2020 and was planning on going to seminary out in California. Due to Covid, however, everything was moved online so I was hanging out in the Des Moines area. I connected with some of the pastors at Hope that I had gotten to know from camp and inquired about doing a pastoral internship. I got connected with pastors Ben and Jon and was an intern at Hope WDM and Hope+Elim.
As part of that internship, I developed a student leadership curriculum. On one of the last days of the internship, I was filming an introduction to the curriculum with Jordyn, and she told me about a potential new position opening up with students at Hope Waukee. I told her that I was moving out to California so I couldn’t really consider the position (haha). Well… God did His thing and put a restlessness in my heart, so I decided to apply! Thinking back on my camp career, I realized that God had already gotten me close with three generations of Hope Waukee students and was preparing me to make a journey here! So I applied, and God brought me to Hope Waukee as the Student Ministry Coordinator just a few weeks ago.”

We are so excited to have Robert on staff and can’t wait for all that is to come this year! #StaffSpotlight

My weekly letter to Lutheran Church of Hope ...
+++
Good morning, Hope!

Years ago, my brilliant brother, David – Fulbright Scholar in Biblical Languages, and now on a team of interpreters hired to work on a new English translation (TPT) of the Bible – wrote an article published in the Christian Post that I couldn’t find in my files today. But I remember most of it, so here’s my summarized paraphrase that I hope gets to the intent of his original insights (credit him for the good points, blame me for any mistakes as the explanations for each surprise are all mine) …

20 SURPRISING THINGS YOU WILL NOT FIND IN THE BIBLE

1) An apple in Eden.
Adam & Eve bit into forbidden fruit, but the Bible says nothing about an apple. Could’ve been a pear, or pomegranate, or deep-fried peaches on a stick (ok, so that’s the Iowa State Fair, not the Garden of Eden). Regardless, no apples in Eden.

2) Noah getting mocked for building an ark.
Primary source for this myth probably comes from a popular 1960s comedy album, not the Bible.

3) A whale swallowed Jonah.
It was a fish. No whales in Jonah, or Jonah in whales.

4) Halos on angels.
The word “halo” isn’t in the Bible.

5) Jehovah.
Not a real word, but a mixed-up combination of the Hebrew consonants in Yahweh (YHWH) and vowels in Adonai. Probably best, then, to stick with the actual biblical names for God. I wouldn’t like it much if someone called me Mickey.

6) The Sabbath is Sunday.
According to the Bible, it’s Saturday. Sunday is the day of Jesus’ resurrection, and thus became the preferred day for Christian worship. Worship once per week fits Scripture’s rhythm of creation and Sabbath command, but it’s also a fact that the first Christians gathered for worship daily (Acts 2:46). Don’t lose the spirit of God’s law (worship weekly, better yet daily) for the letter of the law (worship must be on a certain day).

7) Women shouldn’t pursue careers.
Proverbs 31 praises women who pursue careers.

8)December 25 is Jesus’ birthday.
Yes, Jesus’ birth is worth celebrating with everything we’ve got once a year, so no apologies for our big Christmas celebrations in December! But there’s nothing in the Bible to suggest Jesus was born December 25.

9) Three kings at the stable on Christmas Day.
The Bible mentions a manger (not a stable) and magi (not kings, not necessarily men, not necessarily three). They brought gifts to Jesus several weeks (if not longer) after his birth.

10) Mary was a teenager and Joseph was a much older man.
Maybe, but more likely, and more in line with 1st century Jewish customs, they were similar in age.

11) Pipe organs. Pews. Pulpits. Steeples. Liturgy. Hymnals. Lent. Advent. Dressing up for a 60-minute service. Pastors wearing special robes for Christian worship.
While we might prefer these traditions, none are biblical mandates, or even suggestions. In fact, they aren’t mentioned. Worship instruments that are in the Bible: guitars, drums, cymbals.

12) Jesus had long hair and a beard.
Maybe, but the Bible doesn’t say that (even if Grandpa Chip in Talladega Nights claims otherwise).

13) “Personal relationship with Jesus,” altar call, sinner’s prayer.
You guessed it. Not in the Bible.

14) Election guides, or any suggestion that following Jesus is primarily about where we stand on political issues.
Nope, not in the Bible.

15) Demons that possess (own) people.
The Bible describes people having unclean spirits of demons (which Jesus heals), not that demons have (own) people. Flying upside down on the ceiling is Hollywood, not the Bible.

16) The Book of Revelations.
It’s Revelation, as in one revelation (a vision) from Jesus sent to John via an angel.

17) The word “antichrist” in Revelation, or the word “rapture” anywhere in the Bible.
Revelation describes a “beast,” not an “antichrist.” First & Second John is the only place in the Bible “antichrists” (plural, not singular) are mentioned, described as anyone who denies Jesus as the Messiah, and not just in the future (many had already come in the past). “Rapture” isn’t a biblical word. There’s a lot of misunderstanding about apocalyptic texts in Scripture. We’ll do a sermon series at Hope on what the Bible really says about the end times later this year. Stay tuned!

18) A devil with red skin, horns, or a pitchfork.
The devil shows up in Scripture, but not in a Halloween costume.

19) “God helps those who help themselves.”
That’s Ben Franklin, not the Bible.

20) “Money is the root of evil.”
Biblically, the “love of money” is the root. Big difference.

That’s the short, far-from-complete, list. But I hope you get the idea. It’s important to know what Scripture really says … and doesn’t say. So how can you learn more? Become biblically fluent (as I’m fond of challenging you, and the rest of our church, to do)! Now’s the perfect time …

+ Come and worship this weekend at Hope! You’ll hear a message based on things that are really in the Bible, and you can pick a time that fits your schedule, in-person or online: Saturday 5pm, Sunday 8, 9:30, 11am, 5pm, and – coming soon – Wednesday 6pm (starting September 15).

+ Sign-up for a new class or group! Start with the Alpha Course, or dive into one of several new Bible studies at Hope starting soon! If you've already taken Alpha, get connected to a men’s or women’s Bible study, or a Life Group for adults! For younger adults, college, high school, junior high students, or kids, we’ve got lots of great options, too!

Immerse yourself in the stories and wisdom of God’s word! It will strengthen your faith, help you discover God’s will in your daily life, and reveal truth (things the Bible really says) that will set you free (John 8:32)!

Peace,
Mike Housholder

PS- Thank you for your generosity, Hope! We just completed our fiscal year (September 2020-August 2021) with total offerings that surpassed both last year's giving and this year’s general fund annual budget. As a result of this significant surplus, our church is able to invest more in rapidly expanding outreach ministries that bring the gospel to tens of thousands each week. It also allows us to provide greater financial support for local mission partners here in central Iowa, as well as global missions in need right now like Hurricane Ida relief, Haiti earthquake relief, and Afghan refugee support. The Bible says, “God loves a cheerful giver!” Thank you, Hope, for living that out!

Let's pray ...
Gracious Lord God, bless each and every student, each and every teacher, each and every school administrator and staff member, as they head back to school this week! Fill the hallways and classrooms, the fields and gyms, the cafeterias and music halls with a full measure of your presence, your peace, and your protection. Mute the voices of bullies. Amplify the actions of those who reflect the light of your mercy and love. Instill in the hearts of students a passion for learning, a deep sense of kindness for others, and an untouchable joy throughout this school year that can only come from you. Bless each and every parent of a student, too, reminding each one that the sky high level of love and concern they feel for their child/ren is exceeded only by you. Thank you, God, in Jesus' name, AMEN.
