Having just spent the last week in the mountains of Oaxaca and spending time with the barro (clay) families of the area I have such an amazing new appreciation for the time, effort and pride that goes into each and every piece. For generations...no centuries, pottery has been strictly utilitarian. Still used to carry water, strain corn, cook tortillas, eat meals - to live. Over time outside consumers are seeing the beauty of these pieces as decoration and tableware and the local artisans are shifting gears to meet the needs of the buyers all the while helping these small local village economies and traditions stay alive. Next time you see a piece of Mexican pottery please remember the days and weeks it takes to make each and every piece. From mining the clay from the hillside, turning it into a workable material, creating each piece with primitive wheel and tools that have been in a family for generation, to be fired at a family home where one wrong move can ruin an entire batch of hard work. Thank you @threadcaravan for showing me. When I finally make it back to the states and unpack my treasures I will have lots to share. Until then....see these beautiful people.
