Health Betterment Initiative
Better access. Better care. Better health for our community.
Our organization’s mission is to mobilize communities to prevent liver diseases caused by viral hepatitis among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, African immigrants, and other high-risk groups. Through collaborative partnerships, our organization provides culturally and linguistically appropriate viral hepatitis outreach, education, screening, Hep B vaccination, linkage to care, and patient navigation services for impacted communities.

🔗 THE HEPATITIS B & D CONNECTION
Did you know Hepatitis D can only infect people who already have Hepatitis B? That makes Hepatitis B prevention one of the best ways to prevent Hepatitis D too. 💉
Living with Hepatitis B? Ask your healthcare provider if Hepatitis D testing is right for you. 🩺
🧡 Know HBV. Know HDV. Protect your liver.

🎉 What an incredible day of service and celebration!
Today we screened close to 40 clients and made real impact, from helping navigate phone service issues to supporting clients through the care navigation process.
A special thank you to our partners at The George Washington University School of Nursing for joining us during testing, and to our Data Team for their support.
But most importantly, today we celebrated Sulema Pacheco Tehan 🎂 and her tireless dedication to our DC Linkage to Care program.
Along with Michael, Sulema is the backbone of helping our clients navigate to care with compassion and commitment. She embodies what it means to go the distance for our community.
We shared cake, gratitude, and joy with everyone at the shelter, because this work is about building relationships and celebrating the people who make healing possible. 💚
Thank you, Sulema, for everything you do. 💙
Gracias, Sulema, por todo lo que haces. 💙

❤️ Today is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day.
More than half of people living with HIV in the U.S. are now over 50.
Yet stigma, isolation, and gaps in care still keep many older adults from getting tested, treated, or supported the way they deserve.
Aging with HIV comes with unique challenges: managing HIV alongside other age-related health conditions, navigating a healthcare system that doesn't always ask the right questions, and facing stigma that's followed some for decades.
Getting tested has no age limit.
Getting care has no age limit.
Everyone deserves to age with dignity, regardless of HIV status.
📍 Know your status. Know your options. Talk to your provider, no matter your age.

💉 Vaccination is one of the best ways to prevent Hepatitis B.
✨ Bonus: since Hepatitis D can only infect people who already have Hepatitis B, preventing Hep B also helps block Hep D.
🩺 Not sure if you need the vaccine or testing? Ask your healthcare provider.
🧡 Prevention starts with knowing your options.
For over 20 years, HBI has shown up for our community, and Woodbridge was no exception. 🤝💙
On Sept 13, we hosted a screening and education event to serve our unhoused neighbors.
Meeting communities where they are since 2006.

🩸Think you know how Hepatitis B spreads?
Hepatitis B can be transmitted through contact with infected blood and certain body fluids.
Common ways it spreads include:
✅ Sexual contact
✅ From a pregnant parent to their baby during childbirth
✅ Sharing needles or injection equipment
✅ Sharing personal items, such as razors or toothbrushes, that may have traces of blood
❌ Hepatitis B is NOT spread through hugging, handshakes, sharing meals, sharing utensils, or sitting near someone.
