This Black History Month, ASLA honors not only the legacies that shape our field, but the Black landscape designers who continue to redefine how history is interpreted and experienced in the public realm.

A New Chapter in Public Memory is taking shape:
The Swords Into Plowshares: Recast | Reclaim exhibition brings together photographs documenting the years 2020–2023, when the democratic process behind Swords first emerged. Additional displays explore the histories of the five public parks under consideration as future sites for the work. The exhibition culminates in a presentation of PUSH studio’s concept drawings, one of three selected finalist design teams.
Opening March 14 and running through May 30, 2026, the exhibition invites community feedback as Charlottesville contributes to the selection of the design team and considers how to transform the former Lee statue into a new expression of shared values.

Honoring History in Newburgh: A Step Toward Remembrance
The City of Newburgh has approved a $1.9M capital reserve fund to create an African American Burial Ground Memorial and reinterment site in Downing Park. This initiative will respectfully reinter the remains of 114 individuals of African ancestry discovered beneath the former Broadway School site in 2008.
The memorial will feature: ✅ A central reinterment lawn
✅ Educational and contemplative spaces
✅ Granite markers sharing the story of the “Colored Burial Ground on Broadway”
The design honors the original Olmsted & Vaux vision for Downing Park, using regionally sourced materials to create a space for reflection and learning.
PUSH studio, LLC is proud to collaborate with Studio HIP and partners on this meaningful project—bringing design expertise to ensure the memorial reflects dignity, history, and community.
This is more than a park—it’s a promise to remember, educate, and honor those who came before us.
