Duke Ellington (1899-1974) was a major jazz composer of the art deco time period. During this time he composed thousands of songs for the stage, screen, and songbook. In the 1920s he was as a bandleader of a sextet which soon grew to a 10 person ensemble and performed at broadway nightclubs. Some of his most popular songs include; “Concerto for Cootie”, “Cottontail” and his biggest hit “Take the A Train”.

to the ADSW’s Roaring 20s Fashion, Cocktails, Lipstick and Jazz event in October 2016! Guests were able to enjoy a beautiful piano performance and show presenting art deco fashion from the 20s, and given a tour of the Beall-Dawson Mueseum which exhibited more pieces from the 20s.

Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish-born painter known for her bold, glamorous Art Deco portraits and nudes. After fleeing the Russian Revolution, she rose to fame in 1920s Paris with her sleek, stylized depictions of modern women and men and high society. Her work, combining classical technique with modern aesthetics, remains iconic for its elegance and sensuality.
