Sports Still Loom Large, And Streaming Content Drives Viewing Growth

Media consumption in the US has gone through dramatic changes over the last few years. Nielsen is now tracking linear vs digital (eg TV vs Streaming) and issues reports on that data every month. Broadcast, while still important, now skews very heavily towards seniors. Just recently, streaming media passed broadcast TV in total audience.

Here is the latest Nielsen report from July

Sports Still Loom Large, And Streaming Content Drives Viewing Growth In July, broadcast recaptured television viewers, growing a percentage point thanks to high-profile sporting events coupled with the opening weekend of the Olympics.

Katz Backs Impressions-Based Currency for Local TV

"In the current local media environment, many stations’ linear programming is still transacted on ratings (TV Points), while their digital platforms are simultaneously transacted on impressions. Now is the time to transition to a universal language of impressions. Katz Television Group supports the industry adoption of impressions for linear TV to enable cross-platform campaign integration at the local level."

Katz Television Groupis the nation’s leading television advertising sales organization representing more than 800 TV stations across a majority of the 210 media markets."

2021 Reed Award Winners

The New Media Firm is honored to have won multiple Reed and Pollie Awards for our work during the 2020 election cycle.

Early in 2020 at the very beginning of the pandemic, we worked with A Better Wisconsin Together to run a strategic television and digital program that helped unseat an incumbent Wisconsin state Supreme Court Justice for only the second time in half a century as well as elect Jill Karofsky to the Court. For our work, we won two Reed Awards along with our collaborators at Blue Wave Voiceovers.

We were recognized with another Reed Award for “Best Use of an Emerging Platform” for our work with Michigan Planned Parenthood Votes supporting U.S. Senator Gary Peters. Our Snapchat ad featured Sen. Peters family’s personal story with abortion - making him the first sitting United States Senator in American history to publicly share a personal experience with abortion.

Our work with Millions of Michiganians’ GOTV radio program to help turn out the voters needed for a Biden/Harris and Peters win also earned a Pollie Award for Independent Expenditure Campaigns.

We are also proud of our work with the One for All Committee to develop messaging to move women voters in battleground states. Our ad "Stages of Grief" took home a Reed Award for "Best Use of Humor in a TV Ad."

Congratulations to our colleagues and all the award winners over the past cycle. We are honored and so thankful for the trust of our clients to help them tell stories that win and make our country a better place.

Jill Underly wins state superintendent election; vows to ensure all schools open in the fall

The New Media Firm was so proud to partner with our friends at A Better Wisconsin Together to deliver another big win in this critical battleground state. This year, we were part of the team that helped elect Jill Underly as Wisconsin's next Superintendent of Public Instruction earlier this week. We ran an aggressive digital program utilizing programmatic, social media, and streaming platforms to reach our target audiences. Our c4 program supported Jill Underly's smart administrative management and critical work instituting all-day preschool and childcare and held her opponent Deb Kerr accountable on her long record of financial mismanagement.

Back in April 2020, we worked with ABWT to elect Jill Karofsky to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in an incredibly contested race against incumbent Daniel Kelly. That race was especially significant as Democrats lost the previous Supreme Court election in 2019.

Wisconsin is proving that there is no "off-year." We're proud to have partnered on these two statewide wins and help build programming infrastructure and ongoing communication to voters, *not* just every two years.

Looking forward to more great big wins in Wisconsin ahead!

Jill Underly wins state superintendent election; vows to ensure all schools open in the fall "I'm ready to get to work on day one and build a stronger more equitable public education system," Jill Underly said after winning the state superintendent election.

President Biden Inaugural Word Cloud

The most common word was "All" which was also the most common word in President Lincoln's first Inaugural speech as well.

"And together we will write an American story of hope, not fear. Of unity not division, of light not darkness. A story of decency and dignity, love and healing, greatness and goodness. May this be the story that guides us. The story that inspires us. And the story that tells ages yet to come that we answered the call of history, we met the moment. Democracy and hope, truth and justice, did not die on our watch but thrive."

As a teacher, it makes a huge difference to me that Jill Biden is a working educator.

We spoke to Jill Lewandowski, an elementary school art teacher from Bridgeville, Delaware about the prospects of a Biden Administration. She’s looking forward to a presidential administration that will invest in our public schools and our educators, and get us back on track in our Covid-19 response and vaccine distribution that allows all schools to open safely again. Here, Jill shares how important it is that Dr. Jill Biden is a working educator — just one example of how a Biden Administration will understand the everyday lives of working Americans.

Mary Jane Volk on Joe Biden

Mary Jane Volk is a nationally recognized fundraiser and campaign strategist, having served at Senior Finance and Political Adviser at EMILY’s List for almost twenty years. She also is a longtime family friend of the Bidens, after having Nelia as a schoolteacher, babysitting the Biden children, and volunteering on Joe Biden’s first-ever campaign for New Castle County Council in 1970. She went on to serve on Biden’s U.S. Senate staff for seven years. Mary Jane took some time to share her impressions of Joe and the values that shaped his leadership.

Today’s personal story comes from Kat Caudle, who met Biden while she was a grad student. She expressed her concern to Biden that a math error in recently passed legislation had caused the price of her birth control to skyrocket. Here she shares Biden’s reaction to hearing her situation and the promise he made that day. We look forward to having an advocate for women’s health and reproductive care in the White House again.

Beatrice “Bebe” Coker is a Delaware civil rights leader, public housing advocate and education activist, and longtime friend of Joe Biden. After knowing Joe for fifty years, Bebe has this to share about Joe:

“He tries so hard with people to make them feel comfortable. To help them feel special. To help them feel important. He does that with ease because it’s not a show and tell. He wants you to know that your humanity means something to him.”
