Why do some households buy a modern cookstove and then choose to keep using smoky fuels?
Fuel stacking is one of the most stubborn challenges in the clean cooking sector. It erodes health and climate benefits, and undermines the business models of clean cooking enterprises. But robust, comparable data on why it happens has been thin.
CCA's User Insights Lab is releasing the findings from the largest fuel stacking study in sub-Saharan Africa to date: 3,000+ household surveys across Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia, and Malawi, conducted with seven clean cooking companies using a standardized diagnostic tool.
Join CCA on 30 June to hear what the data shows about customer behavior, which cooking practices drive stacking, and what companies can do about it. Representatives from Emerging Cooking Solutions and CLEAN-Air Africa will share how they've applied and tested these findings in practice.

Honored to be supporting Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella and PI-CREF, through the Clean Cooking Delivery Unit, to improve access to clean cooking solutions in Sierra Leone. As Dr. Yumkella points out, President Julius Maada Bio has placed clean cooking at the center of Sierra Leone's energy agenda and Mission 300 commitments, and we look forward to continuing to support these efforts.

What does clean cooking have to do with gorilla conservation?
Collecting wood for fuel contributes to habitat degradation, impacting gorillas through food loss, stress, and increased risk of disease transmission.
Clean, modern stoves and fuels can provide the energy people need while improving air quality and reducing pressures on forests.

Introducing the Clean Cooking NDC Tracker 🌍
Over 2 billion people rely on open fires or polluting stoves to cook. Tackling this issue is a health, economic, and climate imperative. Countries' National Determined Contributions (NDCs) are one of the most powerful tools governments have to drive change.
So, where does clean cooking stand in those plans?
Our new NDC Tracker answers that question for 131 low- and middle-income countries:
📌 75% include clean cooking or household energy measures in their NDC
📌 66 countries have explicit clean cooking commitments
This tracker is a resource for advocates, policymakers, and funders who need reliable data to make the case for clean cooking.
