Succeed student and Tritons swimmer Lawrence Sapp headed to Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games - UMSL Daily 08/06/2024

Here's a well-written article by the UMSL Daily, the school magazine for the University of Missouri - St. Louis. ❤

Equity in athletics for athletes with autism and/or intellectual disabilities is very important to Lawrence, and because I love him, it's important to me to. Being "allowed" to swim on a team isn't the same as feeling as if "you are a part of a team."

Reach out to me if you're interested in helping to move this needle forward an inch or a mile. Its long overdue for athletes with disabilities to get equitable opportunities for support and success like athletes without disabilities do.

Succeed student and Tritons swimmer Lawrence Sapp headed to Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games - UMSL Daily Sapp will compete in the 100-meter butterfly. He previously placed fifth in the event at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games.

While sport has value in everyone's life, it’s even more important in the lives of people with disabilities. Unbeknownst to many, athletes with disabilities compete in sports at elite levels, in which qualifying times are only fractions behind athletes without disabilities. Competitive sports for athletes with disabilities (AWD) has dramatically increased over the past two decades in both disability-specific competitions and mainstream sporting events alongside able-bodied competitors.

It’s important for us to listen and hear your perspectives on your experiences with athletics and disabilities—the challenges and the joys. Sharing the challenges with others (who understand) helps us feel less alone and less "judged". It helps us feel supported and connected on this journey that can be extremely lonely and exhausting. Together, we'll raise awareness, acceptance, compassion, and hear each other’s stories.

Accessibility Bridge hosts a series of virtual roundtable discussions to give people with disabilities, their families, friends, and anyone who cares about them a place to listen and discuss shared experiences.

We want to hear it all! All voices and stories are important in our roundtable discussions.
