The heroes of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill are not distant ancestors lost to history. Their courage lives on today. The spirit of the Revolutionary War soldier and the Minuteman beats in the heart of every American who dons the uniform and answers the call.

Hailey's family knew she was in danger. Her community knew she was in danger. But because there was no confirmed abduction, no AMBER Alert went out, and because she didn't have a qualifying disability, a Silver Alert didn't apply.

The system meant to protect kids like Hailey simply didn't have a box to put her in.

That's why I introduced the HAILEY Act.

250 years from now, someone will dig up a time capsule beneath the U.S. Capitol, and find an RV inside it.

Today, I joined the Indiana delegation in contributing to Congress's Semiquincentennial Time Capsule, which will be buried beneath the Capitol and opened on our nation's 500th anniversary — July 4, 2276.

It was important to me that something in that capsule represent the hardworking Hoosiers who built the backbone of Indiana's 2nd District, and this country. Their grit, determination, and spirit belong in American history, and now they do.

Hailey Buzbee had her whole life ahead of her. In January 2026, the 17-year-old was lured away by an adult she met online, and never came home.

Because her disappearance was classified as a runaway, no AMBER Alert was ever issued.

I just introduced the HAILEY Act to close that gap. Hailey deserved better, and so do the countless other children who fall through the cracks of an alert system that wasn't built for the threats they face today.

There's nothing more American than baseball, and doing it during America's 250th year made it even better.

Proud of the LaPorte Middle School 8th graders for honoring Deputy Jon Samuelson, the La Porte County Sheriff's Deputy shot in the line of duty over Memorial Day weekend. Our future is bright with young Hoosiers like these.
