Lynne Roberts Breaks Silence After LA Sparks Part Ways With Sania Feagin to Add Kiana Williams

Los Angeles Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts broke her silence following Friday's practice, confirming the team waived forward Sania Feagin to clear a roster spot for guard Kiana Williams. The roster shakeup comes as the Sparks scramble for backcourt depth with veteran Kelsey Plum and rookie Kate Martin sidelined by injuries. Williams, a former Stanford standout who won a national championship alongside Sparks star Cameron Brink, joins Los Angeles after a developmental stint with the Phoenix Mercury, where she averaged 4.8 points per game. While fans criticized the decision to cut Feagin without giving the young forward substantial playing time, Roberts emphasized the urgent need for a healthy, experienced playmaker ahead of Sunday’s home matchup against the New York Liberty.

Paraguay’s Almiron Gets First Red Card for Covering Mouth as FIFA Introduces New World Cup Rules

Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón became the first player sent off under FIFA’s new World Cup rules banning mouth-covering in confrontational situations. In stoppage time of the first half during Paraguay’s Group D clash against Turkey in San Francisco, the Atlanta United midfielder covered his mouth while exchanging words with Turkey’s Mert Müldür following a foul. Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton reviewed the incident via VAR and issued a straight red card, leaving Paraguay with 10 men. The IFAB introduced the rule in April to curb hidden insults and dissent, allowing mouth-covering only in non-confrontational chats. Almirón’s dismissal marked the rule’s high-profile debut at the tournament.

Baseball Team Forced to Cancel Pride Night Game After Players Expressed Discomfort

The York Revolution, an independent minor league baseball team in Pennsylvania, made history by forfeiting their scheduled June 18 game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs after several players refused to wear rainbow-sleeved Pride Night jerseys. Rather than forcing uncomfortable athletes to participate or canceling the event entirely, team management decided hosting the celebration of inclusion at WellSpan Park took priority over playing. The game was marked as a forfeit, but the club moved forward with all surrounding Pride programming as a free community gathering. To reaffirm its commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity, the York Revolution also announced a $10,000 donation to the local Rainbow Rose Center to make amends for the last-minute change.
