"The Other" by Dr. Fathi Osman
God has created humankind with a disposition towards diversity. Individuals and societies are distinct based on the objective environmental circumstances of the time and place in which they live, their own subjective motivations, and the interaction between the two elements. However, human beings – in all their diversity – are equal in their human origin. Religious faith cannot mean exclusive and permanent rightness for a certain individual or group, and the opposite for all "others." After all, human beings have their free will and intellect, and no human is errorless, except those individuals who were entrusted by God to convey His message to people, and were protected by Him against making any error in delivering that divine message.
This book represents a comprehensive ijtihad on the subject of "The Other" within an Islamic framework. The Arabic word "ijtihad" means the practice of the greatest possible intellectual effort to interpret and implement the divine guidance. This includes considering the sources in their entirety and recognizing their structure and their inter-relations.
Our hope is that this book will enhance the understanding of the Islamic conceptualization of relations between the rulers and the ruled, the haves and the have-nots, the national and the universal, different genders and generations, and Muslims and non-Muslims.

The late Dr. Fathi Osman was a world renowned scholar of Islam who studied the development of contemporary Islamic thinking since 1947. He wrote extensively about the process of change in Islamic concepts, human and gender rights in Islamic and Western perspectives, the Islamic approach to pluralism, the analysis of Islamic history and its interpretation. He published more than 30 books in Arabic and English which represent new approaches in Islamic thinking. Many of his books, including “Reflections” in “Arabia: the Islamic World Review” published in London 1981-1987, have been translated into several languages.
Dr. Fathi Osman argued that the writings of the Quran provide answers to concerns regarding global pluralism According to the Islamic perspective all mankind are ‘children of Adam’. While human beings may all choose to live differently and take various paths, all are united by their very humanity Dr. Osman challenged the Muslim communities throughout the world to remember the Quranic teachings and to accept others for their diversity while remaining truthful to their faith
Fathi Osman was the recipient of many distinguished awards in the US and the UK. On July 6, 1996, he was presented with an award at the University of London by the Forum for Islam and Modernity “in recognition of his great contribution to the contemporary Islamic thought”.
