Don't be fooled—all sod is not created equally. How can you tell the difference between low-quality and high-quality sod?
🟢 The grass should be the same shade of green throughout, not darker or lighter in areas. Inconsistent coloring is a sign the grass is immature or unhealthy.
🟢 Healthy sod grass should be thick and at least 2” long.
🟢 If freshly cut sod feels warm, it’s likely been left in the sun for too long, which can lead to decomposition. Healthy sod will feel moist at the roots. If sod edges are dry, there’s not enough moisture keep the grass alive for very long.
🟢 You want your sod to ideally have no more than 1” of soil attached to it. Too much soil can cause roots within the sod to be unable to grow through to the topsoil in your yard. Not enough soil can cause the grass roots below to be unable to establish themselves.
🟢 Look for soil that cracks or crumbles. This means nutrients the sod needs are not being absorbed.
🟢 Avoid sod with soil that’s packed down.
🟢 Check for weak grass by looking at the roots. They should look tangled and messy. Tied roots will be able to better withstand traffic, mowing, and the elements.
