Irene Sacilotto
Speaking on TANGIERS ISLAND MD ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY .
April 3 2019

7:30 Thoreau middle school
2505 CEDARLANE VIENNNA VA

Just south of the Maryland line, in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, lies Tangier Island, VA. It is actually a series of small islands connected by narrow wooden bridges spanning marshes and tidal creeks. From the mainland, it can only be reached by boat or small plane. On its narrow roads, golf carts and bicycles replace cars as the primary mode of transportation. It is a charming community of shop owners and waterman, with many inhabitants making their living on the water as did their ancestors, oystering and crabbing. Recently, Tangier Island has been the focus of news stories as a possible casualty of climate change and sea level rise as each year flooding on the island becomes more frequent and erosion increases. This presentation is a visual journey, compiled from photos that I have taken over the years. It explores life on Tangier and paints a picture of the island, waterman community, and the wildlife that inhabits its marshes, lagoons, and tidal guts.

P.S.

730 p.m.
THOREAU MIDDLE SCHOOL
2505 Cedar Lane
Vienna va 22180

Robin Kent is a fine arts photographer known for his dramatic images of Washington, D.C. and, more recently, remote locations such as night photography of the Milky Way, in the back country areas of Yosemite National Park, the frozen landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula, also the northern latitudes of Iceland, Greenland, and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
Although Robin has traveled to both Polar Regions, photographing Iceland, Greenland, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago as well as the Antarctica Peninsula, he is asked most frequently to speak about his trips to the monarch butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico. The story of the monarch migration will be his topic for his presentation to the Vienna Photographic Society on February 6, 2019.
Robin’s photographs are in the collections of major corporations, local business organizations, and individual collectors. His training has included landscape photography from the late Galen Rowell, founder of Mountain Light Photography and advanced printing techniques from Mac Holbert, a co-founder of Nash Editions. He is former president and a current member of Great Falls Studios, a consortium of 100 plus artists in Great Falls, Virginia. He is represented by Art Matters in Glen Echo, Maryland. Thoreau Middle School.
The 70's - Kodak 126 focusing on family photos.
The 80's - "Stole" an Air Force buddies Minolta X-300 focused on candid and street photography. Upgraded to my first SLR while stationed in England, never put it down. Had it with me so much, it was rumored that I was CID.
Then a 20-year break. Life and work got in the way....
For the last 10 years, I have been shooting avidly; many different subjects; landscapes, urban decade, macro. Four years ago, I became the President of Loudoun County Photo Club. I earned the title of LPC Photographer of the Year twice, was awarded Photo of the Year, by the members in 2016. Most recently I have been a Tour and Meet-up Assistant, with RoadRunner Photography Tours.
Over the last few years passion, Avian Photography has been my muse; adding peacefulness to his graying years.

we are starting the new year with Alan Goldstein talking on drone photography

Vienna Photographic Society
presents
Come Fly With Me A Presentation On Drone Photography
by
Alan Goldstein
Jan 3rd 2017 7:30 p.m.
Thoreau middle school

A member of NVPS since 2012, Alan has been involved in some way or other with photography for the past 55 years. It all began with a science teacher instructing him on the art of film developing. At that time he was using a Kodak Brownie. Veering off during his teen-age years to using an 8mm movie camera, he returned to still photography during his college years and working as a reporter for his hometown newspaper.
Alan was supposed to call in a newspaper photographer for photos, but the photographer lived nearly 30 miles away, so he opted to take photos himself. At first, he used a Polaroid Type 103 for photos since it made instant, crisp pictures. But encouraged by a classmate and photographer, Alan got access to the college's darkroom, and processed Tri-X each time he had a news event or other photo request. This, plus being a radio disc jockey probably contributed to his less-than-stellar GPA!
After graduating from college, Alan enlisted in the Navy, becoming a Navy Journalist and later commissioned as a Public Affairs Officer.
His high school girlfriend had a Nikon SLR, and that became Alan's Holy Grail. As a low-ranking Navy man, Alan scraped up the money and bought his first true SLR — a Minolta SRT-101. As he progressed up the Navy ranks, he upgraded to a Minolta X700.
Fast forward to 2003, Alan's brother-in-law was getting married and Alan was the photographer. An acquaintance who was a Nikon rep loaned Alan a D100. It was love at first click! Since then, Alan has had a D100, D200, D300, D800 and now a D810, with a D850 on order.
Retired from the Navy in 1994 and retired from Civil Service in 2011, Alan is happy to spend his time making images. He loves photographing just about everything, but really likes night scenes and landscapes. His photos have been used for greeting cards by non-profits, used for proposals by environmental entities, have been used by sports web sites, have appeared in newspapers, and even hang in a gas station.

cOME COMEALL HEAR A WONDERFUL MEMBER SPEAKING ON GATORLAMND IN FLA Barbara saffir .

CUTEST COUPLES:

Since Essedras Suarez can’t make it Dec. 6, I’d like to personally

invite all my fellow members to my photo talk on an unlikely bird

mecca: Orlando's Gatorland, one of the best places in

the country to photograph hundreds of colorful breeding

birds and their babies close up. I'll show you the secret

lives of some of the cutest couples on the planet as they

woo each other and then labor to raise their young. You’ll

meet dinosaur-like Wood Storks, just off the endangered list,

Tricolored and Blue Herons, three types of statuesque Egrets

(whose breeding colors seem straight out of the Sephora

makeup store), and other birds that nest at a natural rookery

tucked away in a kitschy theme park. You'll even get to hear

them "singing" and watch their eye-popping courtship “dances.:

And, of course, I hope my tips will help you enjoy the birds more

and maybe even score a contest winner when you visit. Because

you just have to visit.

I wrote about Gatorland for the Washington Post and

photographed/videoed these big, boisterous birds.
