NEW BOOK CLUB ALERT!!
Banning books is all about restricting access; weโre about reading those books instead! Join the Reading Not Restricted book club as we read frequently challenged and banned books and discuss why itโs critical that kids have access to them. This club will focus on books frequently challenged in schools, so weโll read a mix of picture books, middle grade, and young adult books. Reading these books prepares us to defend them when others try to get them removed from places readers can access them.
We want this book club to be as accessible as possible, so weโll have both in person and online meetings. Theyโll both operate in the same manner and be led by Kathy Ellen. Attend either one and feel free to go back and forth between the two as your schedule allows.
For more information, or to join virtually, email Kathy Ellen at kathyellendaviswriter AT gmail DOT com.

Today, Turtle Joe is thinking about Axie Ohโs THE GIRL WHO FELL BENEATH THE SEA that his owner Mallory read with him as an audiobook! This is a feminist retelling of the Korean tale of Shim Cheong, and an ode to the women of Korean legends, forming their own destiny rather than abiding by a perceived fate. Too bad there aren't any mythical turtle beasts in it!

Elizabeth says, "Are you familiar with this piece of women's history? Published in 1946, THE STREET was the first book by an African American woman to sell more than one million copies. Despite being a groundbreaking author, Ann Petry doesn't get anywhere near the recognition and acclaim she deserves. THE STREET is quintessential American fiction, and its focus on the sacrifices Black mothers are required to make to protect their sons from anti-black violence is sadly just as relevant today as it was in 1946."

Jen says, "People tend to think of women innovators as individuals, but THE AGITATORS shows the power of women working together to further their ideas--as women do today, and have always done. If you enjoy multiple POVs and generational impact, this book is a must!"
