The Lunenburg County Post No. 9954 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was organized on March 30, 1949 at Melodee Hall with thirty-four charter members. First officers of the post were John E. Autumn Days Celebration. We manned a recruiting tent to share information about the great benefits of being a VFW Member as well as what is required to join. There was also a Corn hole Tournament. Winners of the Tournament were as follows: 1st place team of Jason Wilborn and Tony Gittman, 2nd place team of Tyler Barlow and DJ Powell, and finally 3rd place team of Chris Owen and Josh Newcomb. Congrats you guys!

VFW Legislative Alert: Congress Must Pass a Defense Budget Now

Background: The new fiscal year begins October 1, and with no budget deal in sight and the continuing effects of mandatory sequestration, the Department of Defense is facing dangerous cuts that will impact our military personnel, readiness, training and family Quality of Life programs.

It is essential that Congress reach a budget deal and stop the irresponsible policy of sequestration, which asks for even more cuts to our military over the next decade. The VFW is urging all of its members and advocates to contact their legislators and demand action on the budget now!

Action Needed: Call and email your legislators today in both their Washington and District offices and tell them an uncertain budget impacts readiness, hurts troops and their families, and puts our national security at risk. Remind Congress that they created sequestration and are now responsible for ending it, as well as passing an on-time FY 2014 defense budget that will provide for the welfare of our troops, their families and our nation’s security. Time is running out and only Congress can put an end to this dangerous deal for our military.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes after enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember:

Freedom is never free! Everyone who has ever worn the uniform as a member of our Armed Forces knows that.

Freedom is not Free I watched the flag pass by one day it fluttered in the breeze a young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform so young, so tall, so proud. With hair cut square and eyes alert he'd stand out in any crowd. I thought about how many men like him had fallen through the years? How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers tears? How many Pilots planes shot down? How many foxholes wee soldiers graves? No, Freedom is not free. I heard the sound of taps one night, When everything was still. I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That taps had meant "Amen" When a flag haad draped a coffin of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives. Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea, Of unmarked graves in Arlington, NO, FREEDOM ISN'T FREE!!!!

Well another productive meeting tonight, with good food, and good comradship. Also a big thank you to all the folks that do so much to keep the post going. Also I think it is safe to say that we will be having us some Cornhole Tournaments in the near future since the boards are coming together nicely! Remember tonight as you lay your head on your pillow to go to sleep, that there are those out there in harms way that enable us to do just that. Keep all Veterans past and present and their families in your prayers.

The Cornhole Tournament was a success yesterday, thanks to all that came out to support our Post and the Homless Veterans who will be recieving part of the moneys collected yesterday....

Support the local community and numerous different charities and organizations including but not limited too: Ripberger Library, Community Center, Rescue Squads, Easter Seals, YMCA, Patrick Henry Home for Boys, Disabled Vets McGuire VA Hospital, Junior Olympics, Russell Moon Scholarship, American Lung Foundation, Cancer Society, Salem Veterans Hospital, SADD Drug Program Central High School, Boy and Girl Scouts and Babe Ruth Baseball. Additionally they sponsor "Voice of Democracy" contest in the local high school along with "Patriots Pin" award. An annual Youth Fishing Tournament is conducted at the Post's facility. Flags are donated to local Schools and Scout organizations.
