It’s basketball season again and the Union County Recreation Junior Basketball Program got off to a great start on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the new Union County Recreation Center.

Union County Recreation Athletic Coordinator Dustin Thompson said most of the junior recreational basketball games for boys and girls “are in-house where we play against each other - just because we have such a volume of teams this year.

“We’re going to be knocking on the door of 60 basketball teams this year. Just between our (ages) 5 – 6 division and our 7 - 8 division we have 26 teams,” Thompson said.
“We don’t keep score in our 7 - 8 division (or the 5 – 6 division) because we really want to go back to basic fundamentals, teach these kids the game of basketball, make them fall in love with it; and not make it too competitive until they make that jump into the 9 – 10 division.”

Girls (age 8 and under) Coach Kaitlyn Seabolt, one of several girls’ coaches, said of the day’s games, “Fantastic! Today was our first day. They’ve gotten so much better since we started practicing. We were just really excited to be out playing today.

“I love seeing all the kids that are here,” she said, adding that it’s a record-breaking year for the number of kids that have registered for the program.

All the games, both in-house and away, are refereed by certified basketball referees and all teams have coaches. This gives the kids a chance to learn the rules and develop their skills to the fullest early on.

As the kids get older, they can take what they’ve learned here and become better players in middle and high school.
Thompson said there are a few games scheduled with neighboring counties for the 9 – 10 division and about 10 games scheduled for the 11- 12 division.

The Union County Recreation basketball program has age division groups of 5 - 6, 7 – 8, 9 – 10, 11 – 12, and this year 13 – 14. Whatever a child’s age is on Sept. 1 is the age division he or she will play in. Kids are allowed to play one year up.

By the looks of it, the friends and relatives of the players have as much fun as the players themselves. So come on out and join the fun!

Union County celebrates the following employee birthdays for this week: Dan Molton, Kiefer Austin Sinclair, Teresa Stephens, Josefa A. Hale, Colby N. Jones, Richard Jones, Sawyer Beck, James Beise, Katelyn Brown, Diana Nichols, Katie Baxter, and Jaylen McKenna Hogsed.

Union General Hospital received a 2023 Performance Leadership Award for excellence in Outcomes. Compiled by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, the Performance Leadership Awards honor top quartile performance (e.g., 75th percentile or above) among rural hospitals in Quality, Outcomes and Patient Perspective.

“Providing high-quality care is a top priority to the staff at Union General Hospital. Our staff strives to be your first choice in healthcare and to exceed the expectations of every patient, every time. We are honored to be recognized by the Chartis Center for Rural Health’s Performance Leadership Award for excellence in Outcomes. This award helps validate our patient commitment,” stated Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Bierschenk

The Performance Leadership Awards are based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. INDEX data is relied upon by rural hospitals, health systems with rural footprints, hospital associations and state offices of rural health around the country to measure and monitor performance across several areas impacting hospital operations and finance.

“Wherever we go in rural America, we witness first-hand the commitment, determination, and compassion with which rural hospitals serve their communities. Rural healthcare truly is mission-driven,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader, The Chartis Center for Rural Health. “This upcoming National Rural Health Day on Thursday, November 16th, allows us to recognize the efforts of this year’s Performance Leadership Award winners and all those driven to deliver high quality care throughout rural communities.”

Union General Hospital has been dedicated to delivering high-quality healthcare services to our local communities for over six decades. Established in 1959 as a modest outpatient clinic, our facility has transformed into a full-service healthcare system. Nestled amidst the picturesque mountains of Blairsville in Northeast Georgia, Union General is a modern, 45-bed, not-for-profit hospital. Our strategic location places us at the heart of the region, serving as a vital hub for the healthcare of nearby communities.
