Brace yourself⦠because everything you thought you knew about Saint Patrickās Day might be wrong. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but the truth about olā Patrick has been twisted over the centuries, and there are a lot of myths out there⦠Here are some of the biggest misconceptions (and why they're wrong).
1. Patrick is Irelandās patron saint ā but he wasnāt Irish.
Surprising, right? Patrick was actually born in Britain to a wealthy family. He only ended up in Ireland because he was (allegedly) kidnapped by pirates and taken there against his will. Not exactly a vacation.
2. His name wasnāt even Patrick!
No joke. He was born Maewyn Succat and only later adopted the name āPatrickā (from the Latin Patricius, meaning āfather figureā) when he became ordained. Itās the same reason popes take on new names today.
3. He didnāt wear green
Turns out, Patrickās favorite color was blue ā or so the historians say. The association with green came much later, when the shade became a symbol of Irish nationalism.
4. He didnāt drive any snakes out of Ireland
This oneās easy to debunk: there were never any snakes in Ireland to begin with! So, what are the "snakes" we're talking about? Most historians believe the legend stems from an unsavory act of symbolism ā a derogatory reference to Ireland's pagan population and Patrickās efforts to convert them to Christianity.
5. Saint Patrick⦠wasnāt technically a saint
At least, not officially. He was never canonized by the Pope because there wasnāt a formal process for sainthood back then. But his popularity made the title stick, and today, heās widely recognized as a saint anyway.
So if youāre celebrating today ā whether in green or blue ā test your friends' knowledge with a couple of these myth-busting facts. And maybe buy a pagan a drink if you get the chance!

Weāve established five causes relative to our L.I.F.E. mission to help human communities eliminate ideological limitations and provide environments of freedom for all people.
One of those causes is to help insure the continuation of the arts in all forms by supporting individuals, groups, venues and training situations assist individuals with overcoming resource related barriers.
A persistant common misconception is that people from low-income backgrounds are not interested in art. Research shows that this is far from the truth because many from underprivileged communities do appreciate and engage with art but there are several systemic barriers that often limit their access and opportunities to fully participate in the art world.
This article will explore these barriers and discuss how they impact the engagement of low-income individuals with art.
A 2017 National Endowment of The Arts Survey found there were 4 major barriers to Arts Participation.
- Time (73%)
- Cost (38%)
- Access (37%)
- No one to go with (22%)
The Festival Friends Charitable helps provide necessary resources to address each of them by providing resources for tickets, equipment, supplies and transportation.

The My Friend Phil Charitable Fund for Cancer Treatment Assistance has been established in honor of our founderās best friend and college roommate Philip Makowski who lost his battle with the cancer 8 years ago to help provide necessary resources to those affected by the disease.
