Grown Up Comedy
Open mics, comedy events, & comedy learning experiences to help rising stand-up comics thrive.
Grown Up Comedy
Grown Up Comedy was founded in June of 2018 by stand-up comedians Junior Cook & Beth Bloomfield. Their mission is to create open mics, comedy showcases, and educational events for local comedians - all in a professional and mutually supportive environment.
Grown Up Comedy currently offers a weekly open mic at Barrister’s Tavern in Hoover. (1535 Montgomery Highway, at the corner of Lorna Road & Montgomery Highway, set back from the street nestled between Waffle House & EconoLodge - look for the green awning.) The show is FREE on Tuesday nights from 7-8pm every week. You will typically see about 10 comics at this show, each performing up to a 5-minute set. Open mics are where comics (newbies & veterans alike!) try out new material, or re-work their tried-and-true jokes. You can bring your own food (Barrister’s doesn’t have a kitchen, but they don’t want you to starve!), and Barrister’s has great drink specials. It’s always an adventure! Age 21+ only; this is grown up comedy for grown-ups!
If you would like to perform at the Grown Up Comedy open mic, sign-ups are from 6:45-7:00pm, and the show starts at 7:00pm. If you are coming from an hour away or more, message us or send an email to [email protected], and we’re happy to reserve a slot for you. If you arrive after the show has begun, your name goes on a standby list, and if we have time we’ll put you up. We ask all our comics to stay for the entire show (it’s just an hour!).
Every once-in-a-while, we are contacted by touring professional comedians looking for stage time as they pass through town. We can add them at 8pm as our “Featured Guest Comedian” for a 20-minute set following our Tuesday night open mic. After the show, we’ll pass the hat for our traveling comic. If interested, message Grown Up Comedy with your uncut video (5-minutes+), a reference, and the date you’re coming through town.
