Mayor Tom Koch recently presented the 2026 Richard J. Koch Youth Service Award to MSgt. John DeLorenzo, United States Air Force (Ret.), in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the youth of Quincy through his leadership and dedication to the ROTC program at North Quincy High School. Although the award is traditionally presented during Quincy's Flag Day Celebration, this year's presentation was held earlier to accommodate DeLorenzo's schedule.
As a dedicated mentor and educator, DeLorenzo has helped promote leadership, foster patriotism and encourage students to develop a deeper appreciation for service to others.
The Richard J. Koch Youth Service Award honors individuals whose commitment to young people reflects the vision of its namesake, Richard J. Koch, who believed that every child deserves the chance to succeed. His guiding philosophy remains at the heart of the award: “The enjoyment, the participation of the youngster is paramount—and the competition secondary.”

Day 28 of
It’s feels like we have had a million appointments in the last couple weeks for Quinn, that’s a good thing, much of it is follow-ups-as a survivor🙏🏻.
The thing I always say about cancer treatment is it often feels like we are killing people for the cure. Many of the harsh treatments leave long-term disabilities and health issues and that’s IF you can survive the treatments. This week, Quinnie began his 5-year-out from radiation yearly surveillance of his thyroid. Children who have had radiation, are 50x more likely to develop thyroid as cancer as just one of their secondary cancer risks.
Happy to say this was a baseline test and he is doing just fine, thank God. But there are times where I think that cancer is a billion dollar business and this mighty kid’s diagnosis at 3 has made him worth millions to the medical industry, for years to come. But we are lucky, because for now he’s a survivor, we hope and pray that continues.
