Most pet owners know summer heat is dangerous. What they don't always know is how fast it becomes an emergency.
A dog left in a parked car on an 80-degree day can face interior temperatures above 100 degrees within 20 minutes. A cat panting in a sunny window is showing you a warning sign, not enjoying the warmth. The signs are easy to miss until they aren't.

Behind every Rescue Team deployment are volunteers ready to respond. During the Aspen Acres Fire, they answered the call.
Within hours of our request for support, more than a dozen volunteers were on their way to Colorado, joining our Rescue Team members already at the emergency sheltering site. Working through extreme heat, they are helping ensure evacuated animals remain safe, cared for and comforted while their families face an uncertain road ahead.
Every rescue depends on the dedication of volunteers who step forward when animals need them most. Their compassion and commitment make this life-saving work possible.

When the Aspen Acres Fire raced toward their Colorado property, the McGill-Taylor family evacuated without knowing if they would see their home again. They watched through their Ring camera as the flames crept closer. Then the camera went dark.
While the family waited for answers, several of their dogs were in the care of an emergency shelter, supported by our Rescue Team. Every day, the family visited, unsure what they would find when they were finally allowed home.
Then came the news no one expected. A fire-retardant line stopped the flames just 200 feet from their house, and their home was still standing. Soon after, the McGill-Taylor family was reunited with their dogs, finally able to begin putting their lives back together.
When disaster strikes, families shouldn't have to choose between their own safety and the safety of the animals they love. By providing emergency sheltering and expert support, our team helps keep pets safe until they can be reunited with the people who need them most.

difference. Be ready before the sparks fly.

Today, we remember Maverick (Bandit’s Brigade: The Legacy Continues), our 2023 Therapy Hero Dog, and a shining light in the Hero Dog Awards family who crossed the rainbow bridge this morning. 🌈🐾
“His journey reminds us all of the healing power of love, perseverance and the unbreakable bond between humans and dogs.” – Kelly, Maverick's handler
For nearly 10 years, Maverick served with a quiet strength, bringing comfort to children, first responders, veterans and anyone lucky enough to cross paths with him. He was a beloved member of the Fort Leonard Wood USO team and the proud face of the USO Canine Program.
Maverick’s legacy will live on through Kelly and his canine siblings Apache, Valor and Huey. Thank you for letting American Humane Society be a small part of his journey.

When families are forced from their homes by disaster, uncertainty can feel overwhelming.
After the Aspen Acres Fire displaced Juney’s family, our Rescue Team and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region were there to help care for their beloved dog while they focused on navigating the challenges ahead.
Although Juney’s family remains displaced and is waiting to learn when they can return home, they visit her every day for walks, cuddles and time together. These moments of connection provide comfort and reassurance during an incredibly difficult time.
We are proud to support pets like Juney and the families who love them, helping animals receive the care they need when disaster strikes.
