STOP GETTING UPSET! SMALLER PROPS DONT ALWAYS MEAN LESS SPEED πŸ‘‡

Listen up yall, we cant physically help everyone who sends us a message "help me prop my boat". We get 100 of those messages a day and the process of doing that is complex. So we focus on our time on actual customers and do our best to preach to the masses via posts like this. If noone reads or listens to us, we'll thats your fault.

This is another one of those boating myths that costs people a fortune every year.

For some reason, boat owners have convinced themselves that bigger props automatically mean more speed. More pitch. More diameter. Bigger numbers. Bigger ego. Bigger bragging rights. The problem is boats don't care about your ego. They care about what they actually want.

Now before somebody jumps into the comments and says "Well my boat picked up speed when I went up in pitch," congratulations. That's usually what happens after tuning. Usually. But not always.

One thing we see constantly is customers who were already over-propped before the tune ever happened. The engine was lugging. RPM was low. Acceleration was lazy. The boat was working harder than it needed to. Then we add power and suddenly everybody assumes they need an even bigger prop. Sometimes that's true. Sometimes it's completely wrong.

We've had plenty of customers pick up a ton of speed by dropping pitch. We've had customers pick up speed by reducing diameter and increasing pitch etc. We've had customers completely transform a boat by making what looked like the wrong prop change on paper.

Why? Because every hull is different. Every setup is different. Every load is different. Every driver is different. And most importantly, every boat has a sweet spot, and its almost never the same sweet spot as someone else's.

Some hulls absolutely love big props. Others hate them. Some engines want more pitch and less diameter. Some want less pitch and more diameter. Smaller engines especially can be very sensitive to diameter changes. Larger platforms sometimes respond completely differently. There is no universal answer no matter how badly the internet wants there to be one. This is why we have a very strict process when we help our clients prop their boats.

This is why we constantly tell customers to stop copying their buddy's setup. Your buddy's boat isn't your boat. Your buddy's load isn't your load. Your buddy's engine height isn't your engine height. And your buddy's results don't automatically apply to you. Almost never.

One of the most expensive mistakes people make is buying props based on what worked for somebody else. Before long they've got thousands of dollars tied up in expensive stainless-steel paperweights sitting in the garage because somebody on Facebook swore it was the answer.

The other thing people need to understand is that when you hire EMT to help set up your boat, we're not guessing. We're looking at RPM, slip, acceleration, water pressure, engine height, load carrying, hull characteristics, and everything else we can gather from the information you're giving us. The hard part is getting accurate information from guys. You'd be amazed how many times we ask a question and get a GUESS instead of an answer. πŸ˜‚ And this ends badly for the customer.

Then we finally get real numbers and suddenly the entire recommendation changes. Weve dealt with enough guys over the phone that we kinda know who and what we are dealing with before we even get into the details.

That's why we always tell customers the same thing: if you're paying us for setup help, be willing to trust the process. We don't always recommend what people expect to hear. Sometimes the answer is a bigger prop. Sometimes it's a smaller prop. Sometimes it's engine height. Sometimes it's weight distribution. Sometimes it's a completely different prop design altogether. The goal isn't to make the biggest prop work for every boat. The goal is to make the boat work. That's a huge difference.

The fastest boats we've ever worked with weren't built by chasing the biggest prop they could spin. They were built by finding exactly what the boat wanted and giving it to it. Listen to the boat. Listen to EMT. Not Facebook comments.

And definitely not the guy trying to sell you another prop. 😎

SPEED IS ONLY 5% OF THE TUNE.. LETS TALK ABOUT THE OTHER 95% YALL NEVER STOP TO THINK ABOUT πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ

STOP CHASING SPEED FOR A MINUTE!

We know. Fast is awesome.

Trust us, nobody appreciates a big speed number more than we do. We literally built a company around making boats faster. We love seeing customers pick up 5-10+ mph. We love seeing 60 mph become 85 mph. We love seeing offshore boats gain 10 mph and start outrunning boats that used to walk away from them.

But let's stop talking about speed for a minute and talk about something that most boat owners never think about.

What does your boat do the other 95% of the time?

Most people aren't running wide open all day. Most people are cruising. They're fishing. They're carrying the wife and kids. They're pulling tubes. They're running through rough water. They're loaded down with coolers, batteries, Power Poles, tackle, anchors, ice chests, fishing gear, and everything else under the sun. (Thats a story for another day) However, this is where the real benefits of tuning start showing their faces..

One of the biggest things customers tell us after a tune isn't necessarily how much faster the boat is. It's how much easier the boat is to drive. The boat gets on plane quicker. It carries a load better. It stays on plane at lower speeds. It accelerates harder. It doesn't feel like it's working nearly as hard. Its crazy snappy in the mid range. It becomes more enjoyable to use and people start to love their boats again. And today where boats cost 100k+, thats a hard pill to swallow when you hate it in its factory form πŸ™„

A lot of people don't realize that horsepower isn't JUST a top speed modification. Horsepower is torque. Torque is what gets heavy boats moving. Torque is what keeps boats on plane. Torque is what lets you carry a full load of fuel, your buddies, all your gear, and still have performance left over.

That's especially true with pontoons, bay boats, center consoles, offshore boats, and larger fishing rigs. Some of these boats spend their entire lives carrying weight & plowing water. The owners aren't worried about setting speed records. They want a boat that performs better in every other aspect.

Then there's FUEL ECONOMY. This is another area people overlook OR just dont care about. And the truth is with today's fuel prices, you really should look more into this portion of tuning..

Now before somebody runs to the comments and says horsepower burns more fuel, you couldn't be more wrong! At wide open throttle, yes, making more power generally requires more fuel. That's just physics...But most boats don't live at wide open throttle.

When you increase torque and efficiency, the engine doesn't have to work as hard to move the boat at normal cruising speeds. We've seen countless customers GREATLY improve their cruise efficiency because they're carrying the same load with less throttle input and less effort from the engine. The boat feels happier because the engine is happier. And thats proven facts.

Then there's safety. Nobody likes talking about safety because it isn't exciting. But you should at least consider this benefit when youre looking into tuning with EMT. Having power in reserve is never a bad thing. Especially when you get stuck in those surprise waves that your boat otherwise couldn't handle pre-tune. Whether you're trying to get on plane in rough water, avoid an obstacle, carry a heavy load, or simply get home before a storm rolls in, having additional power available can make a huge difference. Its night and day. The on-demand torque could quite literally save your life.

One thing we've learned over the years is that the fastest boat isn't always the best boat, although most would disagree.. all they know is what theyre told.

We've seen boats that gained huge speed numbers but the owners were even more excited about how much better they cruised. We've seen offshore guys become obsessed with their range increase.
We've seen pontoon owners become obsessed with pulling the kiddos on tubes again. We've seen bass boat owners become obsessed with how quickly they get on plane and how much bigger of a prop they can turn. Believe it or not, theres joy in the parts of tuning that noone ever thinks about.
The common denominator is that every one of them ENJOYED the boat MORE after tuning with us.

At EMT, we're obviously proud of the speed gains. That's what gets people's attention. But what keeps customers coming back isn't usually the top speed. It's everything else. Better acceleration, Improved drivability, Insane midrange, Improved load carrying abilities, Increased efficiency, and most of all, the confidence. It's the fact that the boat simply performs better in every aspect of operation, we dont HAVE to be speed demons to make the boat better.

Fast is awesome. But don't overlook everything else that comes with making more power. 😎

ETHANOL OR NON-ETHANOL??

ETHANOL PUMP GAS IS BAD FOR YOUR ENGINE??

NO.. ITS ACTUALLY BETTER! HERES WHY πŸ‘‡

We get this question literally every day and there's still a ton of misinformation floating around about ethanol fuel. Our tunes work perfectly fine with ethanol fuel as long as you're meeting the minimum OCTANE requirement for the calibration you're running. Whether that's 89, 91, or 93 octane, ethanol or non-ethanol fuel doesn't matter to us. OCTANE MATTERS!

Now before the internet loses its mind, let's talk about ethanol for a minute.

Contrary to what the local outboard dealership told you, ethanol isn't some evil substance that's out to destroy every outboard on the planet. In fact, ethanol actually burns CLEANER than straight gasoline. It contains oxygen within the fuel itself, which promotes a more complete burn during combustion. This can legit cut down on all those nasty deposits in your cylinders! This is just one of the reasons modern engines have adapted so well to ethanol content in our fuel. A cleaner and more complete burn means less unburned fuel leaving the combustion chamber and generally more efficient combustion overall.

So if ethanol works, why does it have such a bad reputation?

πŸ“£ Because people confuse storage problems with fuel problems & for quite some time several outboard manufacturers sold fuel lines with PLASTIC inside them. The issues that were created back in the day by these "plastic infused" fuel lines put a bad taste in everyones mouth because they caused expensive and sometimes catastrophic problems in alot of outboards.

The biggest enemy of ethanol isn't your engine. It's time!

Ethanol is naturally hygroscopic, meaning it attracts and absorbs moisture. Think of it like a sponge. If you're running your boat regularly and constantly cycling fresh fuel through the system, ethanol fuel is generally a complete non-issue. Especially today where the "faulty fuel lines" have been taken off the shelves. We have thousands of customers all over the country running EMT tuned engines every day with absolutely ZERO issues. Many of these engines we tuned YEARS ago.

The problems with ethanol usually starts when a boat gets parked... A month turns into two months. Two months turns into six months. And so on...

Now you've got fuel sitting in a tank slowly absorbing moisture while temperatures are constantly changing.

This is exactly why we always tell customers that if they're putting a boat into storage, fill the fuel tank completely before you park it. A partially empty fuel tank has a huge air pocket above the fuel. Every time temperatures rise and fall, that air expands and contracts. Over time it can create a surprising amount of condensation inside the tank. The less empty air space you have, the less opportunity there is for moisture to accumulate. Filling your tank and topping it off effectively eliminates this air space in your fuel tanks.

Letting boats sit in storage for the winter is one of the few situations where we actually like non-ethanol fuel. When your boat has been sitting for extended periods of time, non-ethanol can provide some advantages because it isn't absorbing moisture the same way ethanol does.

However, if you're using your boat regularly and burning fuel consistently, we generally don't see a reason to spend the extra money chasing non-ethanol fuel. As long as the ethanol pump gas meets the proper octane requirement. (Not only do you get to choose which fuel you want your tune built for, when we send your PCM back to you, you get a certification from us stating your minimum octane requirements.)

The biggest thing we care about isn't whether the fuel contains ethanol. It's whether it meets the octane requirement. That's what protects your engine. We are very clear about this and we even send you paperwork with step by step directions on the proper "Octane change proceedure" if your boat just so happens to have a lesser octane in the tank. We dont leave any man to fight for themselves, weve created procedures for everything that everyone can understand & do on their own without spending hundreds of dollars for another shop to do it. This is what allows us to SAFELY make the power we do, and this is why our tunes are reliable. We teach you the ways.

The next time somebody tells you ethanol fuel is automatically bad for every outboard ever built, remember there's a pretty big difference between fuel that's being used and fuel that's been sitting in a tank collecting moisture for six months. 😎

WHY EMT HURTS FEELINGS AND HOW WE BACAME THE FIRST COMPANY OF OUR KIND

Now before yall go sharpen your pitchforks and light your torches hear me out... this isnt a shot at anyone in particular.

Most recently just about everybody wants to be a "boat tuner". The problem is most of them skipped the time consuming part where they actually learned engines & boats πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. Yeah I said it, they got excited about seeing some horsepower numbers, bought some generic software, learned how to click a couple buttons to upload a file, and suddenly they're top experts in their craft...

The issue with that is uploading a file is the easy part. The hard part is knowing what happens when something doesn't go according to plan. That's where most of the industry falls flat on its face. 90+% of other tuners did it to look cool..

Before EMT ever thought about tuning an outboard, we spent years in the dirt turning wrenches, diagnosing engines, rigging boats, testing props, chasing electrical issues, solving fuel system problems, and helping customers figure out why their boats weren't performing the way they should. We didn't start by learning how to make power. We started by learning how these platforms actually work. We learned what makes them happy, what makes them mad, what breaks them, what fixes them, and why. Then we learned how to make them faster.. That was an important pivot for us. And our competition HATES it.

The reality is there are a lot of file builders out there that know nothing but how to build files. And there are a lot of installers out there that know nothing but how to click buttons and install files. But when a customer calls and says, "My boat isn't right," everything comes to a screeching halt. The builder blames the installer. The installer blames the builder. The customer gets told to start replacing parts. Fuel pump. Injectors. Sensors. Batteries. Thousands of dollars later the problem is still there and nobody has an answer because nobody actually understands the platform they're working on. Customers get bled dry of their money and tuners start getting a bad reputation because one guy couldn't follow through to help. Its important for customers to understand why theyre doing business with one company or another.

That's where EMT is different. When a client calls us, we're not just looking at a tune file. We're looking at the entire boat. We're looking at fuel pressure, battery voltage, engine height, prop selection, setup, load, slip numbers, water pressure, data logs, and everything else that can affect performance. We know the files we sell because we built them. We know the engines because we've worked on them. We know the setups because we've tested them. And we know how all of those things work together. That takes YEARS. Not days. Not weeks. Not 1 year....

Some of our favorite customer stories aren't even about tuning. They're about helping somebody over the phone who was stranded, helping somebody diagnose a problem a dealership couldn't find, helping somebody save thousands of dollars by replacing one part instead of ten, or helping somebody get their boat back on the water when everyone else told them they were out of options. We do it after hours. We do it on weekends. We do it while we're eating dinner. We do it because we actually care about the people who trust us with their boats.

Anybody can sell horsepower. Anybody can upload a file. The question is what happens after the sale? That's where experience matters and having EMT on your side has proven time and time again that its an asset worth its weight in gold. That's where customer support matters. And that's why EMT will never be just another tuning company. 😎

If youre tired of getting the run around, reach out to us and experience the EMT difference.

Straight out ofJasons mouth from Cabot Arkansas. He had one thing in mind when he sent us his 60hp PCM.. FAST! He requested we "push the envelope" so we grabbed the go fast k**b & turned his 60 into an 85hp beast. While we were at it, threw in a 7000 limiter so hes got the room to show his competition he means business. The boat is a 400lb HAVOC, this will be interesting to say the least! Thanks for the business 🀝

β˜†β˜†Most boats dont utilize a high limiter, but its there if you want it. 7000 limiters on smaller engines is a risk some are willing to takeβ˜†β˜†
