1. Brigadier General Charles McGee (born in 1919) is one of the last living members of the Tuskegee Airmen “Red Tails.” He has one of the highest combat flight totals and active-duty careers in the US Air Force.
2. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the US Armed Forces. During World War II, black Americans were still subject to Jim Crow laws and the military was racially segregated, as was the US federal government.
3. Men trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama, they flew more than 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa during World War II. They earned more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and encouraged integration in the U.S. armed forces.
4. African Americans fought a war on two fronts in WWII: against fascism abroad and white supremacy at home and laid the groundwork for civil rights.
5. The Airmen's success in es**rting bombers during World War II, with one of the lowest loss records of all the es**rt fighter groups was legendary.
