Herbie and I wish you all a happy yet thoughtful Earth Day!
I’ve been blessed with opportunities to travel and see the spectacular beauty of our natural world. In fact, many of the wilderness experiences in my novels are taken directly from my own adventures.
I’ve also, all too often, witnessed, firsthand, environmental damage. The effects of climate change, of pollution, of overfishing, of invasive species.
I love, for example, indo-Pacific muck diving. The biodiversity is incredible, the individual life forms beautiful and bizarre, but the contrast with the deluge of garbage is stunning.
Much of the damage we’ve done is irreversible.
If we were to, somehow, cease the damage, if we could move the world’s human population elsewhere and make the Earth a global preserve, the result would not, could not ever be the Earth that was.
In our absence, the biosphere would evolve and stabilize, achieving a new equilibrium.
That does NOT mean we should give up!
But I believe we do need to understand the extent of the damage we’ve done to sufficiently motivate ourselves to minimize further damage.
To achieve, as described in my Deep Space Exodus novels, a stewardship based on our enlightened self interest.
We can make the changes, take the steps required to cherish and preserve remaining wilderness, to minimize our impact, to make room for nature amongst us.
Take the time. If you can’t get to wilderness, if you can’t get to a zoological or botanical park, then go to your nearest w**d patch. Crouch down and look, really look.
There are wonders all around us if we but take the time to see.
Oh, and stop by Desert Ridge Barnes and Noble this weekend and pick up your copy of “Return from Eden”.
