⛰️🥾 Trailhead Warm Up

Having the proper warm up before you hit the trails is key! 🔑

Hiking is a repetitive activity that can result in overuse injuries without the proper warm up to prepare your body for the grueling climb (and descent!).

Give this short warm up a try next time you go on a hike!

If you have struggled with hiking injuries in the past, or simply want to prevent them from occurring in the first place, we offer a FREE 15-minute discovery call with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. During this call, you have the opportunity to ask questions and determine if physical therapy is right for you!

🥾 Return to hiking exercises! ⛰️ Hiking requires a ton of single leg strength and endurance. Every single spring, I have people coming to me with overuse injuries because they jumped in to hiking too quickly without the necessary pre-season strengthening. Try out these exercises so you aren’t one of those people! Try incorporating these single length strength exercises 2-3 days a week leading up to (and throughout) hiking season so you can stay healthy! 1️⃣ Bulgarian split squats 😮‍💨 2️⃣ Step Ups 3️⃣ Lateral Heel Taps 4️⃣ Forward Heel Taps 5️⃣ Reverse Nordics Add weight to the above exercises for added challenge! If you’ve had issues with injury/pain while hiking in the past, feel free to DM to discuss being evaluated by a Doctor of Physical Therapy. This can be the year you can hike pain free! #hiking #injuryprevention #denvercolorado #denverphysiotherapy #physicaltherapy #strengthtraining #strengthandconditioning #mountainadventures

PSA: There is no such thing as “perfect” posture! I know…you feel like you’ve been lied to…but it’s true! Sure, most of us have desk jobs and sit hunched over our keyboards and craning our necks to get a closer view of our computer screens. Guess what?! That does not inherently lead to issues! So what does? It’s the fact that we sit in that position for hours on end, day in and day out. So instead of focusing on achieving “good posture”, let’s focus on regularly MOVING out of our familiar, static positions that we sit in all day. Stay tuned for our next post that will give you some exercise ideas to do just that! #denverpt #physicaltherapy #mythbusting #deskjoblife #badposturedoesnotgiveubackpain

Seeking care from a cash PT provider often results in better outcomes, fewer visits needed, increased price transparency, better customer service, and reduced risk of re-injury. 💥 Spine mobility💥 . Back pain makes up a majority of the clients we see. Consistency with spine strength and mobility is key to both fending off back pain and for optimizing function. Give this mobility routine a try a couple times a week to keep your back flexible and healthy. . . . #backpain #backpainrehab #spinemobility #functionalmovement #mobilitydrills #colorado #denver #denvercolorado #denverphysiotherapy #physicaltherapy #rehab #rehabilitation #health #wellness #exercise #fitness #workout #recovery #movementspecialist #strengthtraining #strengthandconditioning #injuryprevention#mountainadventures

💡Tip 2 to avoid knee pain with going downhill - Improve ankle mobility 🦶🏼In addition to your quadriceps acting as a braking force to slow you down while you’re going downhill, the calves do the same thing! If your knees hurt while going downhill, we ultimately want to offload the knee and quads as much as possible. You can do this by making sure your ankles are as mobile as possible so your body can use the calves to help with the brakes! Here are a few of my favorite exercises to improve ankle mobility: 1️⃣ Foam Roll Calves, 2️⃣ Wall Calf Stretch (Bent Knee and Straight Knee), 3️⃣ Banded Ankle Dorsiflexion, 4️⃣ Toes Elevated Step Through. #colorado #denver #denvercolorado #denverphysiotherapy #physicaltherapy #rehab #rehabilitation #health #wellness #exercise #fitness #workout #recovery #movementspecialist #strengthtraining #strengthandconditioning #injuryprevention#mountainadventures #kneepain #runningdownhill #running #hiking #hikingkneepain #downhillkneepain

💡 Tip 3 to avoid knee pain with going downhill - Get your glutes involved! 🍑When going downhill, your knee naturally migrates forward over your toes (more than going uphill). This increases demand through your thigh muscles to act as the braking force, which subsequently increases compression at the knee joint. While is this completely natural and not inherently bad, if you have painful knees with this type of motion, you need to offload compression through the knee joint as much as possible. To do this, SIT YOUR HIPS BACK so your knee doesn’t have to travel quite so far over your toes 🤯 Give it a try and let us know what you think! #colorado #denver #denvercolorado #denverphysiotherapy #physicaltherapy #rehab #rehabilitation #health #wellness #exercise #fitness #workout #recovery #movementspecialist #strengthtraining #strengthandconditioning #injuryprevention#mountainadventures #kneepain #runningdownhill #running #hiking #hikingkneepain #downhillkneepain

💡Tip 1 to avoid knee pain with goin downhill - Keep those quads loose! 🦵🏻Gravity and momentum are the forces that take you downhill. Your quadriceps (AKA thigh muscles) act as the “brake” to slow you down. Any time a muscle has to act as a brake, much more force is needed from the muscle compared to when it has to act to propel. In other words, there is much more force going through the quads going downhill than uphill. Now, looking at the anatomy of the knee…The quads wrap over the kneecap and attach to the top of the shin bone. The kneecap is actually a “floating bone” and is only attached by the quadriceps. So, when the quads are braking while going downhill, and when there is high force being transmitted through the quads for the reasons above, the kneecap gets compressed into the joint surfaces underneath. This can cause pain, especially if there is any arthritis or past injuries to the knee joint. So, to improve knee pain with going downhill, tip ☝🏼 is to keep your quads loose! Check out the videos in the post for ideas on how to keep your quads flexible and ready to take on those downhills!
