Most homeowners notice when their lawn gets overgrown.
Far fewer notice what's happening in their flower beds until the w**ds, vines, and volunteer trees have completely taken over.
A few minutes of maintenance each month can often prevent a major cleanup project later.
We wrote a new blog post discussing the hidden costs of ignoring flower beds during the summer growing season.

🌿 We arrived to find that nature had officially declared victory.
The w**ds were thriving.
The vines were taking over.
The mosquitoes were celebrating.
The homeowner? Not so much.
A little hard work later, and the backyard is usable again.
What's the wildest thing you've found hiding in an overgrown yard?

A freshly mowed lawn is what most people notice—but it’s only part of what happens during a service visit.
Every time we’re on a property, we’re also keeping an eye out for things that homeowners may not have time to notice themselves.
We watch for drainage issues after heavy rains, signs of lawn disease, pest activity, irrigation problems, developing w**d infestations, damaged plants, and other concerns that could become bigger and more expensive problems if left unchecked.
That’s one of the biggest advantages of having a landscaping company visit your property regularly. Instead of discovering an issue months later, you have a professional set of eyes looking things over week after week.
Your yard is a vast ecosystem, and healthy landscapes don’t happen by accident. They come from consistent care, attention to detail, and addressing small problems before they become major headaches.
This lawn was freshly serviced yesterday and is looking great as we head further into the East Texas summer season.

A few months ago, my brother and I took a leap of faith.
As Marine Corps veterans, we knew how to work hard, but building a landscaping company from the ground up has been one of the most challenging things we've ever done. Every piece of equipment, every customer, every estimate, and every long day in the Texas heat has required persistence and trust in God's provision.
Today, we're incredibly grateful to say that Howden Brothers Landscaping is growing. We've been blessed with customers who trust us, friends and family who encourage us, and supporters who believe in what we're trying to build.
Your support through our GoFundMe has helped us move one step closer to creating a stable, family-owned business that serves our community with integrity and professionalism.
We're not asking for handouts. We're asking for partners—people who believe in hard work, faith, service, and the idea that two brothers can build something meaningful through dedication and perseverance.
If you'd like to support our mission, we've included our GoFundMe link below. If you're unable to donate, sharing this post means just as much to us.
Thank you for supporting our family, our business, and our dream.
God bless,
Malachi and Mark Howden

If your lawn looked manageable last week but suddenly seems out of control this week, you’re not imagining it.
June in East Texas is when grass shifts into overdrive.
✔️ Warm temperatures
✔️ High humidity
✔️ Recent rainfall
That’s the perfect recipe for explosive growth.
The lawns that stay healthiest through summer aren’t usually the ones getting the occasional cut—they’re the ones receiving consistent maintenance before problems start.
At Howden Brothers Landscaping, we believe lawn care is about more than making grass shorter. It’s about caring for a living system and helping it thrive through the toughest months of the year.

What’s the most frustrating thing a contractor has ever done?
For many homeowners, it isn’t poor workmanship—it’s poor communication.
Not returning calls.
Not showing up when promised.
Not providing updates.
Not responding to questions.
Unfortunately, that’s a common experience in the landscaping industry.
We recently wrote a blog post about why communication matters so much and how it can make the difference between a stressful project and a great experience.

At Howden Brothers Landscaping, we believe that keeping customers informed is just as important as maintaining a beautiful landscape.

🌧️ East Texas lawns are entering one of the fastest growth periods of the year.
With the steady rainfall we’ve been getting lately, grass is soaking up moisture and pushing out rapid new growth almost overnight. While the rain has been great for overall lawn health, it also means mowing frequency becomes extremely important this time of year.
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is allowing the lawn to get too tall between cuts and then removing too much of the blade at once. This can stress the lawn, weaken root systems, create uneven color, and leave your yard struggling during the hotter months ahead.
Healthy lawns thrive on consistency.
Weekly mowing during heavy growing season helps:
✔️ Promote thicker turf
✔️ Reduce w**d pressure
✔️ Encourage stronger root development
✔️ Prevent scalping and stress
✔️ Keep your property looking clean and healthy even during rainy stretches
In East Texas, lawns are living ecosystems that respond quickly to moisture, heat, and maintenance habits. This time of year especially, proactive care matters.
If your lawn is growing faster than expected with all this rain, we’d love to help.

🚨 BEFORE & AFTER BACKYARD CLEANUP 🚨
This backyard had become severely overgrown over time and required a major cleanup effort just to make the space accessible again. What you’re seeing here is the first major step in reclaiming the property.
We cut back heavy overgrowth, cleared large sections of dense vegetation, opened up the yard, and created designated debris piles for future removal. There is still more work to be done — including additional fence line clearing and hauling away the remaining debris — but the transformation so far is massive.
A lot of people underestimate how quickly properties can get out of control here in East Texas. Thick overgrowth doesn’t just affect appearance — it can also trap moisture and create hiding areas for pests and rodents.
Projects like this take time, patience, and a willingness to tackle the hard work head-on.

Before and after transformation ➡️
Fresh mulch and proper w**ding do much more than just improve appearance — they help create a healthier landscape ecosystem heading into the East Texas summer.
For this project, we removed w**ds and refreshed the beds with pine bark mulch, which is one of our favorite mulch options for many landscapes here in the Piney Woods. Pine bark helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture during hotter weather, and slowly breaks down over time to improve soil quality naturally.
A properly maintained flower bed not only looks cleaner and more defined, but also helps reduce plant stress during periods of heat and drought.
Small, consistent improvements make a huge difference over time.
