THINKING OUT LOUD
The Electoral Reforms Protest: Where Was Everyone on Monday?

The protest at the National Assembly on Monday was supposed to be a roar for our future. Instead, it felt like a whisper. As the Senate moves to sideline real-time electronic result transmission for the 2026/2027 cycle, the silence from key quarters was louder than any chant.

The Lonely Opposition…

Beyond a few familiar faces like Peter Obi, where were the "united front"? Atiku Abubakar and the others…???

It seems the major political blocs are too busy with internal math to fight for the rules of the game… sad narrative…!

The APC must have been giggling watching the protest in their air-conditioned cocoons…!

If the opposition doesn't show up for the process, do they really care about the outcome?

The "Yeyebrity" Silence…

Where were the influencers and celebrities who usually thrive on our engagement? When it’s time to trend for fashion or beef, the data flows; when it’s time to demand electoral transparency, the timelines go dark. Activism shouldn't be a seasonal outfit you only wear when it’s "cool."

Oh…perhaps, maybe our celebrities were busy lining up in front of the President’s son’s office, to collect the “City Boys” cap and other forced endorsements…
Everything is possible…only in Naija…!!!

The Great Nigerian Shrug…

But wait a minute…, it appears we’ve become a nation of "learned helplessness." The nonchalance on Monday proves that the "powers that be" have successfully exhausted us.

Or haven’t they?

We are so busy surviving today that we are letting them steal tomorrow. A real pity…!

Calling the Bluff…

The National Assembly sees the thin crowds. They see the lack of celebrity pressure.
They are simply calling our bluff…!!!
By rejecting mandatory e-transmission, they aren't just "protecting the process"—they are safeguarding their own political relevance. But can we really do beyond the protests… Go home and pray to the gods to notice…???

BREAKING:
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Steps Down as INEC Chairman, Hands Over to May Agbamuche-Mbu

After nearly a decade at the helm of Nigeria’s electoral body, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has officially stepped down as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a brief handover ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, Yakubu transferred leadership to May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as Acting Chairman. The event was witnessed by Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and senior INEC officials.

Yakubu’s exit comes one month ahead of the expiration of his second five-year term, which was due in December 2025. He was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2015 and reappointed for a second term in 2020, making him the longest-serving INEC Chairman in Nigeria’s history. His tenure oversaw two general elections and several off-cycle polls that defined Nigeria’s democratic trajectory.

Reliable sources revealed that President Bola Tinubu has directed Yakubu to proceed on terminal leave, reportedly following concerns from political quarters about some of his final decisions in office, including the registration of new political parties. The move was said to have been influenced by a briefing from Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who accused Yakubu of working against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meanwhile, reports indicate that President Tinubu is expected to nominate Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as Yakubu’s substantive successor, pending approval by the Council of State, which is set to convene this Thursday. Amupitan, a legal scholar and longtime associate of Senator Dino Melaye, has been tipped as the preferred candidate to lead INEC into the next electoral cycle.

Breaking: COURTS STOPS UTOMI'S SHADOW GOVERNMENT...!!!

The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped Prof. Pat Utomi from forming a “shadow government,” ruling it unconstitutional and void.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment in a case filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), which argued that Utomi’s initiative under the Big Tent Coalition was an attempt to usurp executive powers. The judge stated that Nigeria’s constitution makes no provision for a shadow or parallel government, and any such structure is alien to the country’s presidential system.

Utomi had launched the initiative in May 2025 to provide policy alternatives to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, but the federal government and DSS opposed it, warning it could trigger unrest similar to the protests.

While Utomi insisted the move was within his constitutional rights to free expression and association, the court held that such rights are not absolute and must stay within constitutional limits. Justice Omotosho concluded that establishing a shadow cabinet risks societal disruption, declaring the move null and void.
