Researchers in Tokyo developed a soft robot tongue called Licker, a device built to recreate the feel and motion of being licked by a human tongue.

The project came from the University of Electro-Communications and explored a surprising question: can licking create social bonding in a way similar to the bonds seen between animals and humans?

Licker uses a flexible silicone tongue, artificial muscle style movement, strings, silicone tubes, servo motors, and a motor-driven base. The full system is 230 mm long, with an 85 mm tongue section and an egg-shaped silicone cover to help produce realistic motion and touch.

The team studied human tongue movement and recreated four basic motions. The robot tongue can bend upward, bend downward, return to neutral, and move in controlled ways that imitate the soft, wet feeling of a real lick.

The work was first presented at SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 under the research title "Licker: A Tongue Robot for Representing Realistic Tongue Motions," DOI 10.1145/3355049.3360533. The researchers reported that demonstrations showed the robot could produce a realistic tactile feeling of being licked.

Although the project first appeared years ago, it is getting fresh attention online because the idea feels both strange and technically impressive. It shows how soft robotics and haptics can move beyond simple machines and explore touch, sensation, and social interaction.
