We hear this a lot: "I had an inspection and they didn't find any termites, so I'm good." An inspection is a snapshot of one day. It tells you whether termites are active right now, not whether they will show up next month or next year. Termite colonies can be established for a long time before any visible sign appears above ground, and a property with no activity today can have activity within a matter of months since the surrounding soil conditions and nearby colonies have not changed. That's the difference between an inspection and prevention. An inspection checks for a problem. Prevention keeps the problem from starting in the first place, whether that's a liquid barrier around the foundation or a monitored bait station system. If your last inspection came back clean, that's great news, and it's also the best time to put a prevention plan in place while there's nothing to treat yet. Brown recluse spiders are one of the more misunderstood pests we deal with in Oklahoma. They are not aggressive and will not chase anyone down, but their bite can cause real tissue damage if left untreated. These spiders prefer quiet, undisturbed areas like attics, garages, closets, and stacked boxes, which makes them easy to miss until a client spots one out in the open. A few signs to watch for include finding them in shoes or clothing that has been sitting still, seeing webbing in corners of storage areas, or noticing one near a water heater or in a basement. Queen carpenter ants are on the move and this time of year they mean business. Large and winged, these queens are actively swarming to establish new colonies. Unlike termites they do not eat wood, but they excavate it to nest, hollowing it out over time and causing serious structural damage to your home.
