We had a very special visit last month from Lew Meyer who grew up on the Meyer Farm! Lew’s dad, Joe Meyer, owned the property and it was quite the experience walking around the farm with him listening to stories from his childhood.

Pictured are top row - GTCD staff members, and bottom row right to left - Lew Meyer, Lew's partner Jan, and family friend Leonard Roush.

We are EXCITED. Last evening the Leadership Team; Advisory Council; and some of the GTCD Board and Staff were able to tour one of the proposed potential sites for the Great Lakes Incubator Farm. We met up masked, and socially distanced to do a walk through of the property and have discussion of the vision of this site as an agricultural incubator.

We have a great group of Council members behind us whose experience and knowledge will contribute to the success of this program. Here are some pictures of our exploration, and collaboration to envision this site as the potential home of GLIF.

Stay tuned for individual introductions of our Advisory team over the next few months. Without them, we would not be able to make the future of this program possible!

Why the Headwaters Incubator Program Helps Beginning Farmers

What is a farm incubator? What is the purpose of the Great Lakes Incubator Farm (GLIF)?

An incubator farm aims to host new and beginning farmers by lowering barriers to begin or enhance a farm business. Essentially, incubator farms creates opportunities and resources to grow these businesses by providing land, technical assistance, education/training and more at a low cost. An incubator farm can host multiple aspiring farmers at one time to kick start their business- new entry to farming can come with high costs, infrastructural needs, land access, and technical resources and education that are not always easily accessible for aspiring farmers.

With the average age of the farming population increasing, opportunities to get involved and sustain a farm business can aid in securing farmland and the future of regenerative farming for years to come. With an incubator farm program, new and beginning farmers can make their dreams come true while stewarding in a new generation of sustainable, holistic land management.

A program like this can immerse a motivated aspirant farmer by connecting them with the local and regional food systems in which they are starting their businesses. This connection in terms of providing resources for these farmers is defined with this idea in mind:

“The changing path to farming. While farming certainly depends on natural and material resources, infrastructure, and knowledge, it also requires people. Beginning farmers are a critical piece of local food systems and civic agriculture, especially when it comes to ensuring the longevity and future of food systems now being built. Times have changed. It is possible and common, at least in the United States, to become a baker or a smith without having been born into the Baker or Smith family.”- Brianna Ewert

Our friends, and mentors out West at the Headwaters Farm, explain the importance of an Incubator in helping beginning farmers:
