On Saturday, January 11th, the Order of the Arrow (OA) Winter Banquet for the Dzie-Hauk Tonga Lodge of the OA was held at Mater Dei Parish Hall to join members and guests in fellowship and fun, presentation of special awards, dinner (thanks to Chris Wagner) and a silent auction organized by Jeffrey Abu-Nasser. The annual awards banquet, emceed by Beckham Herrman, recognized the Lodge and its members for all of the hard work they have done over the past year. Matt Riley, Lodge Adviser of 6 years, passed the baton to New Lodge Advisor Paul Rossillon, followed by the tradition of Passing the Bonnet from previous Lodge Chief Brenner Pilsl to Kaylin Phillips.

Congratulations to the following award recipients:
Unit of Excellent Award – Troop 88 and Troop 89
Uncas Award – See Photo of Recipients
James E. West Award – Nate Waters and Kaylin Phillips
Founders Award – Lynda Riley and Brenner Pilsl

The highlight of the night featured guest speaker Collin Huerter, Lodge Chief in 2009 and 2011 Region Chief – facilitating a spirited round of peer-led group activities adding friendly competition and festive spirit to showcase the leadership traits Scouts learn by being a youth led organization. Following the keynote was the Scout Executive Minute, led with a challenge from Wayne Pancoast, Scout Executive, to members to reflect on the “What Is Your Why of Being Here" to exemplify the Scout Oath and Law through cheerful service to others and foster a strong brotherhood by joining others to be a positive force within the Scouting community.

Take a peek at photos from the evening.

As we prepare for the winter storm ahead of us this weekend, the Jayhawk Area Council loaned nearly 100 cots from the Falley Scout Reservation, also known as Camp Jayhawk, to three warming stations in Topeka.

“The Jayhawk Area Council is pleased to provide this support to those in need of a warm place to stay,” Scout Executive/CEO Wayne Pancoast said. “The third point of the Scout Law is ‘Helpful’ and we teach each of our Scouts to ‘Be Prepared’ for all situations. Our cots are not used during the winter, so it just makes sense to put them to use where needed.”

The cots were delivered today to Let’s Help, Fellowship HI-Crest Church, and True Vine Missionary Church. The loan service, held in partnership with United Way of Kaw Valley, marks the third year the group has provided aid during severe weather conditions. See photos of today's joint efforts of service or tune in to KSNT 27 News or WIBW for local coverage.

Make sure to tune in to your local news outlets for weather updates throughout today and over the weekend. Be safe!

As we gear up for the 2025 Friends of Scouting campaign, I want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for your support of the Jayhawk Area Council. Here are a few highlights of what we were able to accomplish in 2024, thanks to support from you.

• Over 300 new Scouts attended Cub Adventure Day camp free for a day of activities, campfire programs and fun!
• Over 300 handbooks for given as a welcome gift to new Scouts thanks to a bequest.
• New units were formed in Coffey, Shawnee, Greenwood, Lyon, and Osage counties.
• The Emporia Fire Department started a Firefighting Explorer Post to join our Fire Post at Topeka Fire Department, the Topeka Police Department Police Post and our Aviation Post at Billard Airport, the oldest, continually operating Aviation Post in the country.

We were pleased to partner with Topeka Center for Advance Learning & Careers (TCALC) to hire Culinary Arts students as our camp cooks. Not only did we have the best food any summer camp has had, but these young students also developed their skills in culinary arts while participating in everything our summer camp had to offer.

Thank you once again for your continued support and generosity. Your contributions have been instrumental in helping us continue our mission to support Scouting in our 11-county Northeast Kansas region.

We wish you a warm and joyous holiday season with your loved ones.

Best regards,

Wayne Pancoast, Scout Executive/CEO
