Recently, we had the privilege of hosting refugee families from Ukraine for a special evening of play, learning, and community at the museum. A group of excited children huddled around the air exhibit, giggling and shouting as they used directed air tubes to make balls float, seemingly by magic.

These small scientists were discovering Bernoulli's principle: fast air produces more pressure than slow air, keeping the balls suspended until the air tube—or a curious hand—changes the air current. More importantly, they were discovering curiosity, wonder, joy, and a sense of belonging in a country far from home.

Play is powerful. It teaches, inspires, and connects us to others. In this season of joy and connection, please help us support more evenings like this with a gift to the Discovery Center. We are grateful for the generous support of our community!

Spark curiosity through play by making a donation to the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, Topeka's nonprofit children’s museum. A gift from you will help every child access rich and diverse museum experiences — more than 1 in 3 admissions are free or reduced-cost, funded by donors like you.

Thanks to your support, our museum is thriving. Within the last year, we hosted more than 100,000 visitors for the first time in our history. We set a new attendance record with 1,192 visitors on March 16, 2023, and the number of mobile museum events tripled. As our visitor count grows, your gifts make it possible to fund and expand our play areas. We’re dedicated to making sure every child in our community gets to start a lifetime of learning with curiosity and joy. By continuing our access programs and free or reduced-cost admissions and field trips, we ensure that all children and families get the chance to play.

Check out the video above to learn more from local kids about how play is powerful, and give today here on Facebook or at https://kansasdiscovery.org/give/

St. Nicholas Day: the festival of children celebrated in Ukraine. A night of laughter, fun, food, and friends. We hosted more than 40 children and their loved ones at the museum tonight for a night of play. Generous donors supported this event for refugee families, complete with delicious sweets, a dance from the Sugar Plum Fairy, a present for every child, and warm gloves and scarves for everyone. Special thanks to Yana Ross, Kansas Ballet, and our donors for creating this magical night.
