Pueblo Potter Erik Fender (Than Tsideh or Sunbird, born 1970) is a highly skilled and creative potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo. His work has been influenced by his mother, Martha Appleleaf, and his grandmother, legendary potter Carmelita Dunlap and great, great Aunt Maria Martinez. Over the years Fender has worked in a variety of styles both traditional and contemporary, including polychrome, black-on-black and his innovative green-on-black vessels. His designs often include traditional feather patterns as well as his own contemporary interpretations of petroglyphs and animal forms. All of his work is made by hand with clay gathered from San Ildefonso Pueblo and constructed using the traditional coil method. Highly collectible, you might want to make this yours! Our Historic Building is Art in Itself
The building housed meat markets from 1890 to 1899. With construction starting in 1888, and occupancy in 1890, the building has stood sound for the past 130 years. Architectural firm, Hopkins & Holland, designed a block of three buildings for Messrs. Handy, OâBrien & Minney â 927, 929 and 931 â some of the first buildings in the 900 Block at that time.
Numerous businesses have called 931 home over the past century â coal dealer, tinner, restaurants, print shops, banks, law firms, utility companies, gift shops and more. From 1978 to present, Stephen Smith has occupied this stone and brick building starting with a photography studio, and in October of 2018, opened a downtown fine art gallery.
Historic features are clearly exposed, displaying the fine craftsmanship of its architecture. Stone and brick walls, along with an ornate tin ceiling and transoms, add character to the intriguing appeal of the galleryâs fine art display space. The many textures provide an inviting environment for our guests to enjoy the artwork of artists represented by Stephen Smith Gallery.
