Our Story
Friends of the Library is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization formed to establish closer relations between the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and the people it serves; to aid, promote, develop and advance the operation of the Library; and to support and cooperate with the Library in developing community services. This is accomplished through advocacy and fundraising.
Friends members are advocates sharing the impact the library has in the community. The library has the resources and ability to help people effect positive change in their lives. Memberships are available in the Chandler Booktique or the Friends office. Memberships expired one year from the date of purchase. An individual membership is $20. A family membership starts at $30 and includes everyone living in your household. Benefits include admission to the Member’s Only nights of our four Book and Media Sales (giving members first choice), receiving 10% discount on your entire purchase every visit in the Chandler Booktique, three newsletters a year and an invitation to the Annual Meeting.
The Friends operate three lines of business. We sell donated books, DVDs, CDs, record albums and library discards as well as gift items. Our online store is through Amazon.com, our retail outlet is the Chandler Booktique (the used book and gift store in the library) and then our four sales a year held in Marvin Auditorium. Check out our website for more details at tscpl.org/friends
All our proceeds are donated to the library at the end of each year. Our funds are undesignated and are often used for pilot projects or innovative ideas that keep the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library on the cutting edge of technology and services. Some examples are the first Neighborhood, the first Smartlockers, the 3D Printer for the Make-It-Lab were all funded by the Friends. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library, the Summer Learning Program and the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery’s competition (The Printed Image or the Topeka Competition) are funded annually.
