Level: Wellness • Mind owner Shane is certified in Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT). In BCT, communication skills are seen as crucial tools for repairing & strengthening relationships while refraining from discussions turning into debate & conflict. With Valentine's Day this month, here's a summary of some of these skills that couples (or anyone) can use now & year-round:
I-Statements: Clearly & calmly stating your feelings & needs without blaming or judging your partner. "I feel hurt when you..." instead of "You always..." and focus on the behavior: “When we argue, it makes me feel sad.”
Active listening: Fully focusing on your partner by making eye contact, nodding, & offering verbal cues like "right", "I see”, or “mmmhmm”.
Validation: Acknowledging & accepting your partner's feelings, even if you disagree with them: “I can see why you feel that way”.
Listening with understanding: Restating your partner's words in your own terms to show understanding.
Non-judgmental responses: Avoiding criticism, blame, or interrupting your partner. When communicating, the speaker should say one or two sentences, then pause so their partner can respond accurately.
Asking clarifying questions: Seeking further information & avoiding making assumptions: “You said you would like to just hang out and watch a movie tonight. Is that right?” Partner responds, then ask, “Is there more?”
Positive reinforcement: Praising your partner for using good communication skills or making positive efforts: “I liked it when you brought me coffee. It made me feel loved.”
Negotiation: Finding solutions that work for both partners through compromise and collaboration. Sit down for a planned discussion with no distractions.
Maintaining respect: Avoiding personal attacks, insults, or hurtful language even when disagreements arise. Refrain from making threats of divorce or separation.
Non-verbal communication: Maintaining eye contact, using appropriate body language (not crossed arms, slouched posture, etc.) & expressing warmth & affection.
Taking responsibility: Owning your part in conflicts & being willing to apologize for mistakes.
Timely communication: Addressing issues promptly instead of bottling up emotions or avoiding discussions. However, a timeout can be an effective skill & either partner can ask for one: “I’m starting to feel frustrated. Can we take a 10-minute timeout?”
Remember, these skills are just tips that all couples can benefit from, can also be used in friendships & other interactions, & are not a substitute for a licensed therapist who can help with challenging relationship issues.
*Practice these skills using light topics like the weather & have fun with it.
Celebrating Valentine's Day without succumbing to commercialism can be even more meaningful. Here are some ideas to focus on love & appreciation rather than materialism:
Focus on experiences, not things:
-Cook a romantic dinner together: Put on some music, light candles, & whip up a delicious meal from scratch.
-Have a picnic in the park: Pack a basket with finger foods, a bottle of wine, & a cozy blanket for a laid-back afternoon.
-Plan a creative date night: Go stargazing, take a painting class, or visit a museum.
-Volunteer together: Spend the day giving back to your community through an organization you care about.
-Plan a scavenger hunt: Leave clues around town leading to special memories or meaningful locations.
Express love through personalized gestures:
-Write a heartfelt letter or poem: Put pen to paper and express your feelings in your own words.
-Create a memory jar: Fill a jar with notes about things you love about each other, funny quotes, or future plans together.
-Give the gift of time: Offer to help with chores, give a massage, or simply spend quality time talking & listening (see other post about communication skills).
-Make something by hand: Bake a cake, paint a picture, or knit a scarf – anything that shows effort & thoughtfulness.
-Plan a personalized playlist: Fill a playlist with songs that have special meaning to your relationship.
Celebrate love in all its forms:
-Have a game night or movie marathon with friends & family.
-Send handwritten love notes to people you care about, not just romantic partners.
-Do something nice for a stranger, like buying them a coffee or offering a helping hand.
-Plan a self-care day: Read a book, take a relaxing bath, or spend time in nature.
-Donate to a charity that supports love and connection.
Remember, the most important thing is to be present & express your love & appreciation in ways that are meaningful to you and your loved ones. Forget the expectations & pressure of commercialism, & focus on creating memories & strengthening your bonds.
*Now, look at this adorable Goldendoodle:
Feeling lonely around Valentine's Day is completely understandable, especially with all the emphasis on romantic love. Thankfully, there are many ways to counter those feelings & make the day meaningful, even if you are single or going through a tough time. Here are some ideas:
Celebrate Yourself:
• Treat yourself to a solo date: Take yourself out for a nice meal, see a movie you've been wanting to watch, or indulge in a spa day.
• Focus on self-care: Pamper yourself with a bubble bath, get a massage, or spend some time on your favorite hobby.
• Write a love letter to yourself: Reflect on your strengths, qualities you love, & things you're grateful for in your life.
Connect with Others:
• Plan a Valentine's Day potluck or game night with friends: Share the love with your platonic crew & celebrate friendship.
• Volunteer your time: Helping others is a fantastic way to combat loneliness & feel good about yourself.
• Join a Valentine's Day anti-singles event: Some places may host themed parties or activities specifically for solo individuals.
Shift Your Perspective:
• Reframe the day: Think of it as a celebration of love in all its forms, not just romantic love. Show appreciation for your family, friends, pets, or even your favorite things.
• Distract yourself: Get lost in a good book, watch a funny movie, or listen to your favorite music. Take your mind off the hype & do something you enjoy.
• Remember, it's just one day: Don't let Valentine's Day define your happiness. Focus on building strong & fulfilling relationships throughout the year, instead of just one day.
• Limit social media: Scrolling through pictures of happy couples can trigger loneliness. Take a break from social media or unfollow accounts that might bring you down.
• Practice mindfulness: Meditation or deep breathing can help you manage negative emotions & stay present in the moment.
• Seek professional help if needed: If you're struggling with persistent loneliness or sadness, talking to a licensed therapist or counselor can provide valuable support.
*Remember, you're not alone. Loneliness is a common experience, & there are many ways to cope with it. Choose what resonates with you most & make Valentine's Day a day of self-love, connection, & personal joy.

Level: Wellness • Mind Topeka Strengths-Based Therapy for a Level Life
Welcome Jennifer Bidwell, LMSW!
From the outside, it may seem that therapists have it all figured out and that we have it all together. However, that's not reality. I connect with my clients not because I do all the right things all the time but because I have been there myself. While my education and degree allow me practice as a Licensed Master Social Worker, it is my life experience that has taught me the most valuable lessons in being with someone in their trials and struggles. It is a precious gift to walk alongside someone in their journey of healing and help them uncover the answers they already have but perhaps couldn't see.
I approach therapy from a person-centered view with the client leading while I act as a guide and companion. I see through a lens of trauma and attachment with the understanding that while we are a product of our past experiences and relationships, we can also choose a new way forward by changing behaviors and patterns that no longer serve us. I have training and personal experience in grief & loss, trauma & attachment, and mood disorders and have worked primarily with adolescents and adults. I don't use any single modality for treatment as I believe they are all tools to be used as best suits the situation and client. As such, I have training in Trust-Based Relational Intervention, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as others which I use in conjunction with laughter, authenticity, and honesty to assist clients in finding their own path to healing.
You can schedule directly with Jennifer by email at [email protected] or by calling 785.221.2755 then Press 2.
Welcome Trevonne Wilcox, LMSW!
I graduated from Washburn University in 2020 where I received my Masters in social work. I have had the pleasure of working with children, teens, families, couples, and adults for 10 years. Mental health has become important in my life both professionally and personally. Healing is a journey, and it takes two.
In my practice I want to be the other person to help you begin this process. My goal is to break down the barriers and misconceptions/taboos of mental health in all cultures while providing a non-judgmental and safe environment. I welcome ALL because we ALL deserve to have a place to “exhale” from our busy demanding life.
You can schedule directly with Trevonne by email at [email protected] or by calling 785.221.2755 then Press 3.
