A terrifying tricloslan timeline...

1966 - patented as a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent and initially restricted to medical settings.

1972 - incorporated into a variety of worldwide consumer products including soaps, toothpaste, and mouthwash.

1978 - detected as an environmental contaminant in U.S. wastewater, river water, and sediment. FDA issues proposal to remove triclosan from certain consumer products, but never releases an enforcement ruling.

1997 - Hasbro fined by the EPA for claiming that toys manufactured with Microban (active ingredient, triclosan) would protect children from infectious diseases.

2001 - 76% of commercial liquid hand soaps contain triclosan.

2005 - The FDA’s Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee voted 11-1 that antibacterial soaps and washes were no more effective than regular soap and water in fighting infections.

2006 - CDC found a 42.3 percent increase in human urinary triclosan levels in studies completed between 2003-04 and 2005-06.

2008 - EPA study shows a dramatic decrease in thyroxine, a thyroid hormone critical for normal development, in rats exposed to increasing concentrations of triclosan.

2009 - the Endocrine Society released a statement advising pregnant women and small children to avoid triclosan.

2010 - The Natural Resources Defense Council sues the FDA in U.S. District Court to force the agency to issue a final rule to its 1978 proposition.

2013 - FDA agrees to finalize their ruling on triclosan, citing the need for additional studies of its potential endrocrine and developmental effects; impact on bacterial resistance; and carcinogenic potential.

2016 - FDA bans triclosan in over-the-counter antibacterial soaps. Companies have one year to reformulate products, take them off the market or submit a New Drug Application (NDA).

If you've made it this far, you should know triclosan can still be found in clothing, kitchenware, furniture, and toys—products not regulated by the FDA. Avoid products marketed as anti-odor, antimicrobial, or antibacterial.

📰 Big news!!! New York state regulators have banned several popular laundry detergents, citing a new state regulation limiting the presence of a chemical believed to be a human carcinogen (cancer-causing chemical)

These detergents all contained more than 3 parts per million (PPM) of the chemical 1,4-dioxane.

New York law limits the chemical in laundry detergents to 2PPM.

The consumer watchdog group Ingredients Matter said it tested many different brands of detergent last year and found most contained some level of 1,4-dioxane, including plant-based products.

The group said conventional laundry detergents from Arm & Hammer, Tide, and Gain contained more than 3 PPM 1,4-dioxane. Other products from Tide's gentler lines and products from Mrs. Meyers, All, and Method tested between .18 and .4 PPM, making them acceptable under NY State guidelines but still containing some amount of 1,4-dioxane.

Which state will be next to ban these toxic detergents?

There are more than 2,700 chemicals that Norwex will not put in its products. Each formula is also tested for impurities including heavy metals, 1,4 dioxane, ethylene oxide and acrylamides. We also test the biodegradability of each formula and are proud of the USDA Biobased certification we have on many products, like our Liquid Laundry (97%) and Eco-Wash Laundry Detergent Strips (60%)
