The IRS also encourages taxpayers to file electronically. While a person can choose direct deposit whether they file their taxes on paper or electronically, a taxpayer who e-files will typically see their refund in less than 21 days. Taxpayers can track their refund using "Where’s My Refund?" on or by downloading the IRS2Go mobile app.

“Where’s My Refund?” is updated once daily, usually overnight, so there’s no reason to check more than once per day or call the IRS to get information about a refund.

Taxpayers can check “Where’s My Refund?” within 24 hours after the IRS has received their e-filed return or four weeks after receipt of a mailed paper return. “Where’s My Refund?” has a tracker that displays progress through three stages:

(1) Return Received,
(2) Refund Approved, and
(3) Refund Sent.

Whether through IRS Free File or commercially available software, electronic filing vastly reduces tax return errors, as the tax software does the calculations, flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information.

New W-4: Adjusting your tax withholdings just changed

Adjusting how much tax is withheld from your paycheck will likely now take longer — except for working married couples — thanks to a new Form W-4 released this week from the Internal Revenue Service.

The new form is longer and gets rid of allowances that you could claim for yourself and other family members. Instead, it asks for more precise information that may require a second look at last year’s taxes. The changes to the form better reflect the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) tax law that went into effect in 2018. Adjusting how much tax is withheld from your paycheck will likely now take longer — except for working married couples — thanks to a new Form W-4 released this week from the Internal Revenue Service.

Retirement Contribution Changes for 2020

The contribution limit for employees who participate in 401(k), 403(b), most 457 plans, and the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan is increased from $19,000 to $19,500.

The catch-up contribution limit for employees aged 50 and over who participate in these plans is increased from $6,000 to $6,500.

The limitation regarding SIMPLE retirement accounts for 2020 is increased to $13,500, up from $13,000 for 2019.

The income ranges for determining eligibility to make deductible contributions to traditional Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), to contribute to Roth IRAs and to claim the Saver’s Credit all increased for 2020.

Taxpayers can deduct contributions to a traditional IRA if they meet certain conditions. If during the year either the taxpayer or his or her spouse was covered by a retirement plan at work, the deduction may be reduced, or phased out, until it is eliminated, depending on filing status and income. (If neither the taxpayer nor his or her spouse is covered by a retirement plan at work, the phase-outs of the deduction do not apply.)

Conroe woman pleads guilty to embezzling around $800,000 from New Caney business

This is a story we hear all too often, and it is one that small businesses cannot afford. It is worth the cost to hire an independent CPA firm to put a second set of eyes to the accounting cycle of your business, and implement internal controls around significant points that will maintain security around the company’s cash flow. Don’t play games with your company’s future. You’ve earned it!

It almost took the company out of business,” Cory Johnson said.

One co-owner left in 2017 because of losses incurred. These same losses lead to two full-time employees being laid off, including one man whose wife was close to giving birth.

“We felt horrible having to let him go,” Jennifer Johnson said.
The bulk of the money she owes has been paid, according to the case’s prosecutor, Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Joel Daniels. Jennifer Marie LaBarge, 47, pleaded guilty to aggregated theft and was sentenced to 180 days in jail and received 10 years probation. 02/26/2019

AICPA wants more penalty relief for underpayments and late payments by taxpayers

The American Institute of CPAs is asking the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department for additional penalty relief for taxpayers who didn’t get around to adjusting their withholding and estimated tax payments last year after the changes in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The IRS agreed last month to provide penalty relief in response to requests from the AICPA, as well as the National Conference of CPA Practitioners, and probably more importantly, leaders of the Senate Finance Committee. But the AICPA feels the relief didn’t go far enough. Click below for more information! IRS kicks off 2019 tax-filing season as tax agency reopens; Use to avoid phone delays | Internal Revenue Service

The Internal Revenue Service successfully opened the 2019 tax-filing season today as the agency started accepting and processing federal tax returns for tax year 2018. Despite the major tax law changes made by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the IRS was able to open this year’s tax-filing season one day earlier than the 2018 tax-filing season.

More than 150 million individual tax returns for the 2018 tax year are expected to be filed, with the vast majority of those coming before the April tax deadline. Through mid-day Monday, the IRS had already received several million tax returns during the busy opening hours.

“The IRS will be doing everything it can to have a smooth filing season,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said. “Taxpayers can minimize errors and speed refunds by using e-file and IRS Free File along with direct deposit.”

The IRS expects the first refunds to go out in the first week of February and many refunds to be paid by mid- to late February like previous years. The IRS reminds taxpayers to check “Where’s My Refund?" for updates. Demand on IRS phones during the early weeks of tax season is traditionally heavy, so taxpayers are encouraged to use to find answers before they call. Blackberry is quietly trying to make a comeback — but not with phones

What was once the world's biggest smartphone maker is now out of the phone manufacturing business altogether. Since 2009, its market share has fallen from 20% to just .1%.

But Blackberry is looking to stage a comeback, just not with smartphones. Blackberry has been quietly ramping up its self-driving car software efforts to compete with the likes of Apple down the line. Blackberry is trying to get a slice of the self-driving car industry with its QNX Operating System.

2016 Year in Review

Happy New Year everyone!

In 2016 Melissa Rascon made her mark both in The Woodlands, Oak Ridge, and Conroe area, as well as in Houston by getting involved in many facets of the community. So much so that she put this video together to share some of her experiences with you.

From attending new business grand openings, to many community events that give to charity, to getting involved in political campaigns for the first time to support candidates she sincerely believes in and supports, Melissa made her way around the Houston Metropolitan area, met many people and formed many friendships and business partners.

We expect 2017 to be a great year with the much anticipated passage of the largest Tax Reform Bill since 1986. This year starts off with the Super Bowl happening right here in Houston. We believe this will be the kick off a very prosperous year for everyone. We encourage everyone to stay focused and get involved in your community!

In 2017 Melissa decided to focus her community efforts on two specific causes near to her heart -- Child S*x Trafficking and Animal Cruelty.

Because Melissa is very passionate about giving back to the community, we will be doing something different this year and sharing events on our FB page that are happening in the Houston area for various charities, particularly around the causes the firm will be supporting.

We wish you a great 2017! 11/23/2016

Judge Suspends Rule Expanding Overtime for Millions of Workers

A federal judge has blocked a Department of Labor rule on overtime pay that made more than 4 million private-sector workers eligible for mandatory extra pay or time off.

The regulation was scheduled to take effect on Dec. 1. It would raise the salary limit below which workers automatically qualified for overtime pay to $47,476 from $23,660.

U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant of the Eastern District of Texas, whom President Obama appointed, imposed a nationwide injunction against the rule Tuesday at the request of 21 states, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business groups. A federal judge in Texas issued an injunction, arguing that the Obama administration had exceeded its authority by raising the income limit so significantly.
