The law line is for residents of Montgomery County who have general legal questions. Topics include family law, criminal law, consumer protection, bankruptcy, and more. The volunteer attorneys do not provide specific counseling yet offer general information and inform people about their rights and options and what legal resources may be available for callers to follow through with their concern. Callers’ identities, as well as the identities of the volunteer lawyers, will remain anonymous.

AS A MATTER OF FACT, YES!

Your college-bound 18-year old is legally an adult. This means that you no longer have the legal right to participate in his or her medical and financial decisions even if he or she is still on your insurance plan. Without basic documents, you may not have access to your child's medical or financial information in the event of an emergency, such as an accident or illness. If your child wants to ensure that you have this authority, he or she must delegate that authority through properly-executed documents.

* A Medical Power of Attorney gives the parent(s) the ability to
make medical decisions for the child if the child become
unable to do so.

* A HIPAA Release grants permission to health care providers to
release the child's medical information to the parent(s).

* A Financial Power of Attorney grants parent(s) the ability to
take care of a child's financial matters if the child cannot.

* A Directive to Physicians communicates the child's future
wishes about medical treatment if the child is in an irreversible
or terminal condition and can no longer communicate.

My good friend Liz Kramer has been appointed by the Minnesota Attorney General to serve as the state's Solicitor General. In this role, she will serve as the legal officer representing the state's interests in any appellate court proceedings.
