Here is a preview from my NEW EPISODE in our podcast 'The Forensic Financialist'

Understanding what needs to be examined is almost as important as conducting the review. In step 2 of the REARview, Jeff introduces how the examination answers the question of “why did this happen?” By reviewing (step 1) some of the key measures, like Net Income, Working Capital, and Cash Balance, you can then determine what needs closure “examination.”

What’s so important to remember, as Jeff emphasizes, is that the REARview makes business assessment easy. Jeff simplifies everything so even the non-business professional or entrepreneur can figure out how her business is performing. She can then be ready to take action – “adjust.”

What is the difference between being a manager and being a leader? According to John Maxwell, there are five specific steps to leadership development: (1) Position; (2) Permission; (3) Production; (4) People Development; and (5) Pinnacle. We start at #1 and through development, reach the Pinnacle of leadership, where people follow you because of who you are and what you represent.

Simon Sinek, in his book "Leaders Eat Last," suggests that true leaders are there for their teams and not for themselves. Essentially, a leader serves others and by doing so creates a productive and cohesive team. It is certainly more complicated than that, but that's the high level.

Question: where are you? Do you consider yourself a "manager" or a "leader?" Do people follow you because they have to (manager) or because the want to (leader)? Do you have a serving mindset?

Zig Ziglar said that you can get whatever you want in life, as long as you give others what they want. That is certainly true in sales, but isn't that also true in leadership?

Here's the deal... when people in the workplace gossip it hurts the company. Inappropriate conversation (or gossip) creates a toxic environment. What's a "toxic environment?" It is an environment that is fraught with drama, infighting, intimidation, and GOSSIP. Here's the short of it... when employees gossip it will create a toxic environment. Trust will nosedive. Productivity will evaporate. Profitability will vanish.

When leaders gossip - game over. Success will be elusive. Bottom line (literally) is don't gossip.

Are you a visionary, task master, or manager?

There is a difference between the characteristics of visionary, task master or manager. A visionary is a macro-thinker, one who has the big ideas. A task master is a doer. This is the "get it done" type of person who tackles any task at hand. The manager will be sure to provide the direction needed to get the tasks accomplished and meet the goals that were developed.

Is one type better than another? No. Businesses need all three types to function properly and optimally. Michael Ge**er, in his book "The E-Myth Revisited" presented us with the entrepreneur, the manager, and the technician. As entrepreneurs slowly drift to performing the technician role, they fall away from their true passion, the thing that got them in business in the first place. 13% of small business owners consider administration work to be a top challenge, according to National Business Capital and Services.

Here's a thought, in order to keep your entrepreneurial juices flowing, give the administrative tasks to someone else. There are individuals highly skilled in the detail, as well as managing them. Make your life easier, and give your business a better chance to succeed by giving the detail to the experts. And you, the entrepreneur, the visionary, keep thinking big picture. We need your big ideas to keep the world progressing!

What does success mean to you?

Everyone has a different definition of success. Some feel it is wealth, some feel it may be friends, a contribution to society, or to be the perfect physical specimen. According to John Maxwell, success is "knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others." That's pretty deep, but spot on. We should be working to fulfill our purpose and helping others along the way. So, do what you are inclined to do, follow your passion, but don't forget that at the same time and just as important, you are to add value to others. Serve others.

As you achieve success, or fulfill your purpose and have helped people along the way are you done? Can you call it mission accomplished? No, you can't. You should never stop trying to improve yourself and you should never stop trying to add value to others.

Here's a real simple, all-inclusive daily check… Are you better today than you were yesterday? If so, well done. If not, why not? Then, make sure you are better tomorrow than you are today. Improve each day. That's it. Improve each day.

In Napolean Hill's book "Think and Grow Rich" Mr. Hill introduces us to the six basic fears, they are (1) fear of poverty; (2) fear of criticism; (3) fear of ill health; (4) fear of losing someone's love; (5) fear of old age; and (6) fear of death.
I would suggest that during the COVID-19 pandemic fears in our society are greater than ever. However, it doesn't have to be that way.
Mr. Hill enlightened us with fear categories, but also went on to say that fear is a state of mind. Meaning, that we must believe that something will happen or could happen and that occurrence will negatively impact us.
I would also note here that it says in the Bible 365 times not to be afraid. That's a lot of reminding that fear is not beneficial.
Bottom line - don't be afraid. Fear will only hinder you from attaining the greatness that you deserve.

According to Indeed.com 56% of small business owners find it challenging to find the right employee. Furthermore, 35% indicated that it is harder now than it was only five years ago to find good employees.

Why is that? Are jobs more challenging? Are candidates less qualified?

In Jim Collins' book "Good to Great" he suggests that "getting the right people in the right seat on the bus" is one of the key ingredients to organizational success. That said, finding the right people is more important that setting strategy or developing goals. The right people will work to implement strategy and meet goals, even when strategy and goals change.

So then how do we make sure we find the right people? That's on you, the business owner. Here are five musts that should be addressed when recruiting. (1) Job description is comprehensive and accurate for position; (2) Job posting accurately reflects job description; (3) Use personality assessments and skilled based questionnaires; (4) don't skimp on interviewing; and (5) candidate should fit company culture.

This week is National Management Training Week

According to Bloomleaders, 77% of corporations had leadership gaps in 2019. What does that mean? Based on a 2017 article in Entrepreneur magazine, a leadership gap is simply a shortcoming a manager or leader has within the workplace that is hindering their ability to add value aligned to their full potential. So what? Think about that, at least 3 out 4 corporations have leaders not working to their full potential, which means some area within that respective organization is not firing on all cylinders.

How do we close the gap? Get educated. Meaning, let's learn how to improve as leaders to we can enhance our value to the organization and to others.
