Prof. Phillip photographed many dead rats on the beach in Canarsie, Brooklyn on September 4 after Hurricane Ida had caused massive flooding in NYC. His photos and interview was part of an article about the Hurricane Ida effect on the NYC rat population in the #Gothamist. The story on the dead rats also ran in other media outlets including the Daily Mail in the United Kingdom, Newsweek, the NY Times, Smithsonian Magazine and CNN.

Yesterday one of our ex-students, Emily P., stopped by the office to bring flowers for our staff member, Ms Daisy McFarlane. Emily mentioned how impressed she was by Daisy's motherly care for her and other students served by the department. Daisy was very touched by Emily's kindness and thoughtfulness. I was too. Thank you Emily and thank you Daisy for your good deeds for our students and the department/college! You are both Champions!

Sorry to write about the passing of Prof. Martin Pulver on February 25, 2021. Prof. Pulver first came to the department in 1966 and retired in August 2020. A whopping 54 yrs! Prof. Pulver was also in charge of the BCC Administration and Finance Department for 3yrs as an interim Associate Dean. That position is equivalent to the VP of Administration and Finance position today. Prof. Pulver had taught the Organic Chemistry I class (CHM31) and the CHM02 class for many years before his retirement. More information on Prof. Pulver's service to BCC and CUNY is included in the department's Memoriam Page on the BCC website:

On February 6, 2021 was a sad day for our department. We lost one of our stalwarts, Prof. Thomas Brennan to Covid-19. Prof. Brennan served the department, college, CUNY and most importantly, our students honorably for the past 23 years. He was interim Chairperson from August 2007 - July 2009. He was always sending us information about internship or other opportunities for our students and also going after grants himself to provide paid internships for students. Dr Brennan was the driving force that created the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology A.A.S. degree program and the Science for Forensics A.S. degree program. Dr Brennan was a string researcher and had 52 research articles on Chemistry, Biochemistry and Crystallography, among other areas. He was also an excellent grant writer with over 4 million dollars in grant money awarded as PI or Co-PI. Dr Brennan was a former boxer having won the Golden Gloves Championship (160lbs open division) in 1964 and was runner-up in the 147lbs class in 1962. We are all going to miss Dr Brennan heaps. He was a champion in the ring and in the academic arena.

“Distance learning” truly went the distance in two recent webinars organized by Dr. Neal Phillip, Chairperson of the BCC Department of Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, and Professor Paramita Sen.

On October 2, 2020, intrepid New Yorkers were at their computer screens at 7:00 a.m. for a webinar from Townsville, Australia and India’s Govardhan Ecovillage to learn about innovations in sustainability and how our students went to India last year and installed a solar powered weather station that has significantly increased weather coverage in rural India. You don’t have to get up that early to see it here:

Congratulations to Prof. Sunej Hans on the occasion of her two students winning first place (Monique Bisasor) and third place (Abdsari Chowdhury) in the 2020 CUNY- BCC Virtual Science Fair. Dr Hans is on a personal mission to increase women and minority involvement in high level STEM research and she has involved 10 students (8 females and 2 males) in her research on neutrinos at Brookhaven National Lab. One of her collaborators on the multinational Daya Bay Neutrino Project in China, Dr Art McDonald, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2015 for his work on neutrinos. Dr Hans shared in the 3 million dollar 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for her work on neutrinos.

The Department of Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences has transitioned to online tutoring using the "Zoom" app. The tutoring schedule with each Tutors Zoom Meeting ID Number is included in the photo included in this post

I would suggest students download the application on their phones first as I found this the easiest way to login on the computer after I had set up my account on my phone.

1. Download the app from the App Store either Google Play or the Apple App Store.

2. Once the application is downloaded, navigate to the app and open it. On the bottom left corner click on “Sign Up”

3. Type in a preferred email address, First name, Last name, click on I agree to the terms of service. Then click on Sign up on the upper right hand corner. A pop-up message will show saying that an email was sent to the email address.

4. The email may take a few minutes to come in. Once the email is received, click on the “Activate" button in the email.

5. Open the app again and sign in again, if asked.

6. When the app is opened, to join a meeting, click on the join icon

7. In the meeting ID area, type in the meeting ID of any of the available tutors which you will find inside the attachment attached to this email.

For the Computer/Tablet

1. Go to the website, zoom.us

2. Click on sign in OR if students cannot sign in on their cell phone they can go to the blue icon “SIGN UP, ITS FREE” and signup through there using the same steps as above.

3. Once signed in, on the upper right side, click on "Join A Meeting” and the student needs to type in the meeting ID of any of the available tutors.

So students who want to join a session just need to type in the meeting ID, we will already have the meeting open at our regularly schedule times.

Let me know if there are any questions

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy,

Nicaela Cartagena, Tutor

Faculty Profile - Anthony Durante, Ph.D., MBA

Dr Anthony Durante is a faculty in our department of the highest abilities and compassion. Students are normally on a waiting list to get into his classes. Dr Durante is also an MBA and brings his many years in the chemical/chemical sales industry into the classroom. He totally enjoys being in the classroom and positively impacting the lives of our students and their families. Dr Durante is also the co-coordinator of the BCC Honors Program and has significantly expanded course offerings particularly in STEM.

Secret: Dr Durante is also a wine maker and wine connoisseur extraordinaire! His wine is one of the main reasons for the popularity and success of our Annual Holiday party. Some people attend just for his wine!
