This is another popular cut sold here at Rosenzweig.

Used mainly in high-end furniture and tables, quarter sawn is the most common milling cut for logs, producing an amazingly straight, striped grain with distinctive “ray and fleck” patterns mixed throughout the plank. The dramatic grain patterns and the resistance to moisture penetration give these boards an advantage over others.

One of our most popular cuts is Rift, White Oak especially. The straight grain pattern is very popular among our woodworkers for use in their projects.

Q: What does rift sawn mean?

A: Rift sawing is when boards are milled perpendicular to the tree’s growth rings, producing straight grain pattern with no flecking present. Though generally a more expensive and rare option, this type of cut creates one of the strongest types of boards with the most consistent visual look. #wednesdaywoodwisdom
