Illegal Drugs, Millions in Assets Seized Following Joint Smoke Shop Investigation in North Texas

On Sept. 22, 2026, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) led a multi-agency investigation targeting the illegal sale and distribution of THC and h**p products at Scorpion Smoke Shop locations throughout North Texas.

As part of the operation, officers executed search warrants at 13 Scorpion Smoke Shop locations.

The operation resulted in the seizure of approximately:

11,468 suspected THC products;

5,475 grams of ma*****na;

33,455 grams of THC;

33,867 grams of psilocybin mushrooms;

23 vehicles; and

Nearly $5 million in U.S. currency and other assets.

During the investigation, DPS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Special Agents found THC and h**p-derived products displayed on retail store shelves. As of July 31, 2026, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) clarified the definition of “Tetrahydrocannabinol(s)” and "Ma*****na extract" in the Texas Schedule of Controlled Substances. Consumable THC products below 0.3% are still legal, however, laboratory analysis of certain products identified delta-9 THC concentrations as high as 26%. Products exceeding the 0.3% threshold, or products containing other THC derivatives, may not be retailed or otherwise introduced into commerce in Texas.

This investigation is part of DPS’ broader efforts to identify businesses that may be unlawfully selling THC and h**p-derived products. During these investigations, Special Agents have encountered smokable THC and h**p products offered for sale despite nearly two months since the new law has passed.

DPS was assisted in the investigation by the Van Zandt Co. Sheriff’s Office, Canton Police Department, Kaufman Co. District Attorney’s Task Force and Wills Point Police Department.

There have not been any arrests at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
