We all tell ourselves stories we believe to be true about who we are. These can be long-standing narratives adopted from a young age, or that we’ve heard from others in our adult years. These stories about ourselves dictate our actions in response to a thought, memory, emotion or urge. We can learn to challenge these narratives and rewrite them to best serve our values and goals.

Acceptance and Commitment therapy is a beautiful way to learn to accept the uncomfortable emotions we all experience by becoming more psychologically flexible.
The goal of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is to create a rich and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it. “ACT” is a good abbreviation, because this therapy is about taking effective ACTION guided by our deepest values and in which we are fully present and engaged. In ACT, the aim is to transform our relationship with our difficult thoughts and feelings, so that we no longer perceive them as “symptoms.” Instead, we learn to perceive them as harmless, even if uncomfortable, transient psychological events.

What an absolute privilege it was to be trained by one of the most influential and published psychologists in the world, Stephen Hayes, on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Meeting with other mental health professionals from around the world, and getting to see some of Philadelphia made for an amazing week!

So excited to be in Philly on this cold rainy day to learn all about acceptance and commitment therapy. Can’t wait to use this type of therapy to help clients! (I am such a nerd…these types of trainings are SO fun for me… learning is my favorite thing 😆)

When working with young adults, I can’t tell you how many stories I have heard of impactful educators in their backstory. Today I heard a beautiful story that modeled just how important teachers are to children and adolescents. Teachers, thank you for what you do. The support, love, and care you give students goes far more than you might ever realize.
