What Roxie the Border Collie sheepdog watches under pandemic lockdown...๐ค
She is wide awake! ๐ฏ. 10 seconds before this Sapphira was sitting there looking at me and when I started scratching her she sprawled out like this. Right after I stopped recording she got up and left.
You can't make this stuff up. Our dogs are bizarre but we love 'em.๐ค I'm sure you guys have stories.... โบ

Another early morning move. This shows the kind of hilly and busy terrain and brush we have to deal with. It's easy for groups to break off and little ones to be left behind.
Roxie (aka Shene) does a good job of keeping them together up this trail. There is a stubborn ewe at the end that gets a little "discipline" from Roxie for not moving when asked politely ๐๐
Roxie runs a tight ship!๐
Change of season means change of wardrobe for Sapphira. ๐๐

Another day of our early morning routine. Our dogs are SO critical to this place. At night I keep the sheep in a 40ft round pen protected with electric netting and hi tensile wire so nothing can get in or out.
Tiago and Sapphira are up at night discouraging the coyotes and bobcats from trying to get on the property. The few that get through the electric perimeter fence to hunt rabbits and gophers in the back of the property need to leave before the day starts. That's our agreement. ๐คจ.
We do a final sweep every morning and if there's an intruder still in the wire.. let's just say it gets quickly escorted off the property by two big white dogs like it's life depends on it (which it does) ๐ฏ๐คฌ
๐๐๐Today's early morning move from the night pen to another part of the property for breakfast. They'll stay out until 6 or 7pm and move almost the whole time. Sapphira is their tour guide and works for tips ๐.
Roxie goes with me pretty much everywhere ๐๐. This is the last stretch of our dirt road back home. Not much of a greeting from Sapphira and Tiago though... ๐

Long before we became a quarantine couple, we were best friends and life partners. One of these throwback pics has it's own throwback pic of us meeting through horses and dreams of a rural life long ago.
A lot of our dreams have come true. It's not easy, but if you have a vision and do a little bit every day to get closer to it and work through the obstacles, everything is possible.
Fortunately we can still laugh together like that ๐๐ @ Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
The job was to get this group of "criminals" through the gate to the other side of the fence. After I watched this again it was clear that Roxie knew long before I did that once she gathered them up and got them moving they were going out the gate. ๐ค
When I called her back over you can see she calmly looked at me like "What? That job's already done.."๐ And sure enough there they went. ๐
My border collie mentor used to say that her best dogs knew what she was thinking and got it done. Roxie is well bred and clearly has that quality. So... the more I focus on communicating the task and letting her figure out the details the better handler I'll be and the happier we'll be as a team. And she's only 18 months old! ๐ฎ๐

Nature presents us with many things to observe and think about. Like why Roxie and this lamb would choose to lie down next to each other in an open field.
Clearly these animals can read intent through body language which most humans are numb to.
Normally this lamb in would be on her feet and running to her mother and Roxie would be directing her as border collies need to put the world in order ๐. But the message "just sit this one out" was clearly sent by Roxie and clearly received by the lamb.
Kinda cool to see this communication in the two young ones.

My parents as young adults. Their commitment to education, our community, and their unbelievable work ethic touched not only us but all around them. They were a lot more outgoing and much sharper dressers than I am ๐๐

Burning 500 calories digging for a chance to catch a gopher that would give them about 30 calories.
They tell me they make it up in volume though ๐ค.โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ
